Fanatical Republican Extremist of the Day: Blake Masters- 2023 Update [1]

On this date one year ago, “Fanatical Republican Extremist of the Day” first profiled Blake Masters, a 2022 candidate for U.S. Senate in Arizona whose resume amounts to “is friends with conservative tech billionaire Peter Thiel”. He considered running for U.S. Senate in the primary against appointed former Sen. Martha McSally, but opted not to at that time. And while he hardly has the nomination locked up against Jim Lamon (who we will have to profile another day), Blake Masters seems like enough of an exestential threat to the country if he gets elected we aren’t going to waste time, and immediately want to profile him.
The first story we saw in the news that made us do a double-take came from the Arizona Mirror only days after word leaked about the Supreme Court possibly looking to overturn the Roe v. Wade ruling, where Masters gave his opinion that he would like it to be possible for states to vote to ban contraception use. Not abortion, but contraception. Birth control pills? Illegal. Condoms? Illegal. If this loon could criminalize pulling out, he would. And it all goes back to the Supreme Court’s 1965 Griswold vs. Connecticut decision, that Masters feels was wrongly decided.
So you understand why we might be a bit concerned about how extreme of a candidate Blake Masters actually is.
Like, when you dig just a little, you find that Masters has touted the literary works of the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, as one of his “intellectual influences”, that’s uh… that’s a pretty bad red flag, there. That wasn’t enough to stop Donald Trump from almost immediately endorsing Masters’ candidacy, but then again, Masters did immediately start questioning the integrity of the 2020 election and promote Trump’s “Big Lie”. He’s seized on that selective fiction enough that he’s promoted the conspiracy theory that all the violence on January 6th, 2021, was a “false flag” attack that was set up by the FBI, and not, y’know, carried out by a conspiracy led by the Proud Boys and Oathkeepers domestic terror groups.
After a bloody stretch of days of mass shootings in late May and early June 2022, including the one at Uvalde, Masters has also blamed mass shooting statistics looking bad on “black people”.
Would it be a surprise then, that Blake Masters has also been a proponent of the “Great Replacement Theory”, touted by white nationalists (and Tucker Carlson on Fox News, who… y’know, is a white nationalist)?
How much of a twisted, bigoted fascist twit are we talking about? Well, in early June 2022, at one of his campaign rallies in Tucson, AZ, a counterprotester showed up trolling Masters and his flock wearing a “Black Lives Matter” shirt. A woman in the crowd assaulted that counter-protester, and when the man used a hand to push her away so she couldn’t continue pummeling him, Masters personally leapt from the stage onto that 73 year old man and placed his hands around his throat. Y’know, something normal that happens all the time at political rallies. Masters then tried to reframe the incident that the man had attacked the woman first, and he was just leaping to her defense, which is a pretty hard sell given that the victim was wearing a GoPro camera that filmed the entire thing.
There was no universe is this tech-funded goose-stepper a better choice for a Senator than retired veteran and astronaut and all-around amazing human Mark Kelly. While Republican voters are willing to elect a ham sandwich provided the ham sandwich can give Democrats food poisoning at this point, Masters lost by over 120,000 votes because he’s that putrid of a candidate. Which leaves many GOP analysts getting heartburn at the news that he and Kari Lake are the top two candidates who will vie to win Arizona’s other Senate seat in 2024.
We can only hope he blows it for them again.
