Today would be the 95th birthday of John Forbes Nash, Jr. (June 13, 1928 – May 23, 2015), famous mathematician and game theorist, whose tumultuous life was chronicled in Ron Howard’s film A Beautiful Mind.

Nash shared the 1994 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with game theorists Reinhard Selten and John Harsanyi. In 2015, he won the Abel Prize (along with Louis Nirenberg) for his work on nonlinear partial differential equations.

His struggles with mental illness began in 1959. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent several years at psychiatric hospitals for treatment. After 1970, his condition slowly improved, allowing him to return to academic work by the mid-1980s.

Nash and his wife died in a tragic car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike on May 23, 2015, when they were returning from the Abel award ceremony in Norway. Their taxicab driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a guardrail.

Nash’s theory on "non-cooperative games" was applicable to many areas of science, economics and human affairs and of course to games like chess

Nash was also curious about whether chess can be therapy, about how the computer age affects the sport of chess and about the ties between chess and mathematics.

From en.chessbase.com/… (May 2015) —

On the evening before the award ceremony John Nash was introduced to World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen. Nash says that he encouraged his son (who was also diagnosed with schizophrenia, to play chess and asks Magnus whether he thinks the game could be good for mental health. "I think it keeps the mind active, I suppose," replies Magnus, who goes on to sign a chessboard for Nash.

Now, let’s apply our beautiful minds to today’s puzzle and ponder how Nash’s game theory might help solve it.
