Chicago Sun-Times: After days of delays, city moves migrant families from North Side to Daley College by Elvia Malagón, Kaitlin Washburn, and Fran Spielman
Erin Armstrong spent Tuesday morning passing out t-shirts that resembled the Chicago flag outside of the High Ridge YMCA. “We’ve worked very closely with these kids, it’s heartbreaking that they’re being moved,” said Armstrong, a preschool teacher with Philip Rogers Fine Arts Elementary School. “They’ve really gotten comfortable here and are just a part of the family. They felt very comfortable at school and we were excited to get ready for the summer and the fall with them.” Armstrong and other teachers at the school have grown close to a group of immigrant students who had been staying at the YMCA at 2424 W. Touhy Ave. — until Tuesday afternoon, when three busloads of families left the facility and headed south to Daley College, at 76th and Pulaski in West Lawn. Some plan to make the lengthy commute down to Daley College, to teach summer school, Armstrong said.
MSNBC: What I witnessed during Trump's arraignment in Miami by Lisa Rubin
I was in the courtroom on Tuesday during former President Donald Trump's arraignment in Miami. As I sat on the defense side of the room, three observations stood out to me: 1.) Trump lawyer Todd Blanche not only whispered to Trump during the hearing but frequently talked to Walt Nauta, Trump's co-defendant in the classified documents indictment, directly or to Nauta and his lawyer together. That’s highly unusual. 2) When the hearing ended, all of the U.S. Secret Service personnel sitting in the two rows directly behind the defense table stood up to flank Trump and then they surrounded him to escort him out. But rather than simply look ahead and leave, Trump turned around and stared down all of the people in the courtroom, scowling and seemingly scanning for someone he knew. 3) As Trump left, Nauta left with him, falling into the line of agents trailing him. It was as if he flipped a switch and went from being a co-defendant to resuming his duties as Trump’s aide in a heartbeat.
Washington Post: Pennsylvania finalizing plan to reopen I-95 after bridge collapse by Ian Duncan and Heidi Pérez-Moreno
Crews are scheduled to work through the night early Wednesday on the demolition of an adjacent bridge carrying Interstate 95 that was compromised in a gas truck fire as officials prepare to release plans for restoring service on the key East Coast artery. “We’re going to try to do it as quickly as we can,” Pennsylvania Transportation Secretary Mike Carroll said at the scene Tuesday as work continued behind him. A northbound bridge collapsed Sunday after a Penn Tank Lines gasoline truck rolled over and caught fire beneath it, officials said. The southbound span subsequently was found to be unsafe and is being knocked down. The crash and fire are under investigation, and experts said the flames would have weakened the steel holding up the bridges. The fire crippled a stretch of highway that carries 160,000 vehicles daily, leaving thousands of trucks facing months of lengthy detours and creating headaches for commuters in Northeast Philadelphia.
New York Times: Inside the Turmoil That Led N.Y.P.D.’s Commissioner to Walk Away by Chelsia Rose Marcius, Maria Cramer, and William K. Rashbaum
On Monday afternoon, Keechant Sewell, the commissioner of the New York Police Department, walked into Mayor Eric Adams’ office unannounced, according to a mayoral adviser. The two met alone and spoke for about 15 minutes. Then, about a half an hour later, at around 4:30 p.m., she sent a departmentwide email that rocked City Hall and stunned the 34,000 officers who received it. In it, Ms. Sewell said she would step down. Ms. Sewell, 51, a guarded official known for a detached professionalism, had given few signs that she was unhappy. In the weeks before her announcement — and the day after — she made the kind of public appearances expected of a commissioner: ringing the bell at the New York Stock Exchange, walking in the Puerto Rican Day parade and speaking at promotion and memorial ceremonies. On Tuesday morning, the police commissioner for less than 18 months spoke to high school students being honored by the Police Athletic League, including one who had been awarded the title “Police Commissioner for a Day.” She told them that law enforcement is a fulfilling career: “The N.Y.P.D. and our city need more young people who are problem solvers.”
DW: France uncovers major Russian disinformation campaign
French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said on Tuesday that France had prevented a hybrid digital attack on her ministry's website, likely carried out by Russian state actors, as well as attacks on other government websites and French media sites. Colonna also said France believed there was a broader campaign to spread disinformation in France by Russian protagonists. "This campaign is notably based upon creating fake internet pages to hack into the identity of national media and government websites, as well as by creating fake accounts on social media networks," she said in a statement. Western states have been acutely concerned about an intensification of Russian-led disinformation campaigns, as Moscow seeks to influence public opinion across the world over its invasion of Ukraine.
BBC News: Italy mourns and asks who will succeed Berlusconi by Sofia Bettiza
Italy is marking the death of ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi with a spectacle befitting the grand soap opera of his life. The one-time cruise singer who led Italy with no prior political experience built a media empire and had a string of wives and girlfriends. The Archbishop of Milan will lead Berlusconi's state funeral in the city's grand cathedral on Wednesday. Italy is holding a day of national mourning. All Italian and European flags on public buildings have been lowered to half-mast. This kind of tribute is unprecedented for a former prime minister. A state funeral is a privilege usually reserved for popes, war heroes and serving ministers.
Guardian: Israel prepares for vote related to controversial judicial reform plan by Bethan McKernan
Israeli politics is once again reaching a fever pitch before a crucial vote related to the government’s controversial proposals to overhaul the judiciary. The Knesset will convene on Wednesday to elect two representatives to Israel’s judicial selection committee – the composition of which is at the heart of the now six-month-old battle over the future of Israeli democracy. Two of the nine members of the panel, which appoints judges, are political appointments. Historically, one has been chosen by the government and one by the opposition. The opposition has put forward the centre-left Yesh Atid MK Karine Elharar as a candidate, but several hardliners in the prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s religious-nationalist coalition have demanded that both positions are filled with their own representatives.
