In our day and age, the Chief of Staff to the President of the United States is widely considered to be the second-most-powerful person in Washington, DC. Yes, more politically powerful than the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, the US Senate Majority Leader, and the Vice President.
By his proximity to the Oval Office in the White House and constant daily interaction with the President, the COS controls access to the President and manages his schedule and time, a very valuable commodity in the larger scheme of things. He (yes, there has never, ever been a female COS) is not subject to oversight by the US Congress and neither is his appointment confirmed by the US Senate. He’s there because the President of the United States chose and trusted him to be at his side to help govern the country. Period.
For these reasons, and more, we should pay attention to what Mick Mulvaney has to say.
