I always enjoy knocking on doors and talking to voters during campaigns. People often ask me why their vote matters and, tied elections aside, I say what’s at stake this November is the budget and investments in public education, health and housing… things that matter to real people.

We have a surplus in the Virginia budget and a historic opportunity to invest to improve our everyday lives and the lives of our children. However, Republican Governor Youngkin wants to give it all away to big corporations and the wealthy, squandering a once in a generation opportunity to improve public education for our young people.

They say “show me your budget and you show me your values” and that is the theme for Freedom Virginia’s bus tour across the Commonwealth this month to highlight what’s at stake in the current budget negotiations. The tour is stopping in Newport News today at 11 am.

Without the Youngkin tax cuts for the rich, local schools would get tens of millions of dollars in additional state funding as well as hundreds of new staff positions to support our students and provide the wrap-around services that a world-class education system requires. Norfolk and Newport News students would get over $800 in additional funding per pupil.

“Governor Youngkin would rather spend over $600 million on corporate tax cuts right now, primarily geared towards the ultra wealthy, than on the next generations of Virginians,” said Democratic House Leader Don Scott. “So Virginians, we are at a crossroads: do we let the MAGA agenda dictate our path, leading us towards tax handouts to big corporations, or do we invest in schools here.”

Legislators will have their say on the budget during a special session sometime this June or July. But the voters will have the chance to weigh in during November’s election. The question is: are we going to invest in schools and stand with our parents, children and teachers? Or are we going to give it away to the big businesses that aren’t even asking for a break?
