So, how was your weekend?
Mine was nice and long since I took today off, to use up some "use it or use it" vacation hours on the books. This morning I ran errands with D.D. We get along well these days which makes me happy. She had to get some stuff at the hardware store for her prop-making job this summer for a local theater troupe, and I was going to wait in the car, but she wanted me to come in and help her decide what to get. When we were in there I asked the sales helper a bunch of questions and my daughter chastised me and asked sweetly if I'd rather wait in the car. It was actually pretty funny. In the afternoon I drove south with my friend M. We took one of my favorite walks, along the old Highway 1 at Devil's Slide and again there were whales galore. We were closer to the ocean than when we saw them farther south down by Half Moon Bay on Memorial Day. Today we could plainly see tails slapping the water and fins popping in and out. So cool. And it was just a glorious day with layers and layers of clouds, blue sky and sea. Bay Areans, get thee to the San Mateo County coast! Devil's Slide particularly recommended for a little walk and whale-watching.
This weekend I spent a couple of days on "retreat" with folks from my synagogue. The retreat center worked its usual spell -- we've been out there many times pre-pandemic -- it's very pretty and peaceful, set in the coastal hills of rural West Marin County, full of critters, lots of foxes running around including a mother and four or five babies residing behind one of the empty cabins, and hawks, quail and wild turkeys, swimming holes and meadows and hiking trails, and lots of lovely streamside alder, grassland bay and buckeye trees. I hated to leave so much that I asked for a job, and it might happen next year! I would just have to find someplace in the area to live, as it's over an hour to drive there from SF. And then I'd still probably have to drive a long ways to get to work. It's been 42 years since I had to drive a car to commute to work. That part doesn't thrill me, but I'm ready for a change. I would keep my SF apartment though! sublet a room or something.
