Truck fire underneath overpass causes collapse of I-95 section in NE Philadelphia [1]

A tanker truck caught fire this morning underneath an overpass of I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia causing a complete collapse of a section of I-95. About 7 miles of Northbound and Southbound lanes are closed and will probably be closed for a while.

Traffic will be a mess, for many weeks if not months, as this section of I-95 will be closed for a while.
x In a short briefing Sunday morning, officials urged drivers to avoid I-95 in Northeast Philadelphia.
“I-95 will be impacted for a long time, for a long time,” said Philadelphia Managing Director Tumar Alexander.

About seven miles of I-95 are closed, from Allegheny and Castor Avenues (Exit 25) to Academy Road and Linden Avenue (Exit 32).

Explosions around the highway collapse were caused by “runoff of maybe some fuel or gas lines that could have been compromised by the accident,” said Bowmer. “We have fire coming out of those manholes,” Bowmer said. (Derek Bowmer is battalion chief for the Philadelphia Fire Department)
