A few wee creatures on the wing. Street Prophets Coffee Hour Sunday. [1]

Welcome to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour, a place where politics meets up with religion, nature, art, and life. Come in, take a cuppa and a cookie (or three!) and join us.

You’d think, being rural and all, I’d not have the same problems with disappearing creatures that they do in town. Unfortunately, I have seen the same sharp drop in butterflies and dragonflies, in frogs and toads, and in pollinating insects. I have never sprayed a “pesticide” on my yard, and I never will. Dandelions are welcome, as is plantain, and for more reasons than, “Hey, it’s all green when you mow it.” I control aphids with bursts of spray from the garden hose, and I remove all stages of tomato worm by hand. I have the only property within sight that still has fireflies, but I’m getting darned few of them anymore. I have several areas of yard covered with creeping charlie, and I don’t mow that, because I still see the occasional honeybee on the blue flowers.

So, here are some of summer’s flying insects. No fireflies, to my regret, but butterflies, moths, skippers, dragonflies, damselflies, and whatever insects caught my eye.

Nope, not a monarch. A viceroy.

And while you’re here, check out this week’s Community Needs List. Maybe someone would appreciate a small bit of help.
