We all know tfg is supposed to present himself in court on Tuesday. Tuesday is also the release date for Ilona Andrews’ newest — I may pick up a bottle of bubbly for that one. Wednesday is the last day of school here in PDX — until August 29th, anyway. My baby brother turns 67 on Thursday.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care! IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

Tananarive Due’s latest. A ghost story based on a piece of her family history. I have a slight acquaintance with this woman. She’s married to one of my oldest friends.
What did ancient (rich) Romans smell like? In 2019, an intact Roman tomb was found while the landowners were intending to install a swimming pool. A vial of perfume that was found among the contents has been analyzed.
The bureaucrat of the 26th dynasty who turned Persian invaders into proper pharaohs.
A study of the purposes to which music was put in Medieval times.
Why thunder has different sounds.
A study of community resilience during the transition from Bronze Age to Iron Age. The excavations happened in the Republic of Georgia.
100 days of mushrooms growing.
Students will design a stained glass window to mend vandalism done to St. Mary’s Church Shrewsbury during the COVID lockdown.
According to the BBC, the 100 greatest children’s books. #1 appears to be Where the Wild Things Are.
The Medici family’s famous hunting grounds may have killed some of them.

We had a scheduled inspection of fire alarms in the complex where I live last Monday and Tuesday. I got home from picking my grandson up to find a note that the inspection happened pretty much as he was getting in the car. They found no problems, but I doubt they actually looked. Ah well, it was incentive to clean the place.
I bought some Trader Joe’s goodies the other day and have already eaten far too many. I spent the last hour before I had to pick up my grandson on Thursday feeling sorry for myself because my stomach was way too full. Fortunately, I don’t indulge in the particular treats very often — I much prefer actual food — but sometimes my tastebuds get set for something, and that particular day, Trader Joe’s had what I was in the mood for.
Thursday morning I took a shower. I actually had to dial it down from full-on hot for a comfortable temperature. I don’t remember the last time that happened in my own bathroom. Yes, I’m still thrilled about being able to have nice showers in my own home.

One site I check two or three times a day is the Ilona Andrews blog. The only place I’m guaranteed to visit more often is Daily Kos.
One of the posts this past week was a warning to NOT purchase the audio version of Small Magics that was available through Audible because it was pirated. A more recent one included a comment (used with permission, I am certain) about the conversation when one of the BDH called in to explain why they had returned it. The customer service person knew exactly what audiobook they were referring to — apparently there have been hundreds of calls about this matter since it came to light. There are reasons we call ourselves the Book Devouring Horde. We have been promised an official audio version of Small Magics; but it might be a while.
