Originally, I thought that the Top Comments entry for this evening was going to be an open thread because I had an early dinner date with a friend this afternoon/evening.
So early, in fact, that I hoped that by the time I docked this particular diary in the queue, I hoped that I would be able to add some pictures of food pRon to the diary as the dishes arrived.
But...the friend had to postpone our dinner into a BRUNCH for late tomorrow morning which does work out a little better for me time-wise but...no food pRon for this evening. :(
It also means that I have time to write a Top Comments diary here on who knows what. And have some rest and relaxation time tonight.
So...I decided to turn this into a bit of a work night. That is, I skimmed through Number 45’s indictment. I am now watching some of the network coverage said indictment on YouTube.
I don’t have much of a reaction to it right now other than to say...who is surprised that #45 is capable of this? He’s been a low-class criminal-type for much of his life. Only because tens of millions of voters elevated him to the presidency has this low-class criminal been allowed to (allegedly) commit such grave crimes that threaten the nation’s national security.
Well...what’s done is done now. Hopefully those voters have “learned their lesson” but...I doubt that.

x From @TheAthletic: Baby Gronk is a 10-year-old whose father is pitching him as the next big thing in college football. “He’s a real athlete. He’s not a normal kid,” his father told us. “He has been trained and programmed since he was 6 years old.”

Anyway, this story about so-called “Baby Gronk” led to the name of Todd Marinovich trending on Twitter .
Marinovich's father, Marv, told Sports Illustrated in a 1988 profile that he wanted to turn his son into the "perfect quarterback," and he detailed the bizarre lengths he would go to make that happen. Marv was a former football captain at USC. [...] However, Marinovich quickly faded in the NFL. He lasted only two seasons, making eight starts and finishing his career with eight touchdown passes. Marinovich used marijuana to cope with social anxiety throughout high school and was taunted by opposing fans as a result. He dealt with more drug issues after high school, getting arrested for cocaine possession while at USC. Marinovich has been arrested at least nine times, on charges ranging from drug possession to sexual assault. In 2019, Marinovich told Sports Illustrated that his father was "a raging beast" and said he started going to different variations of therapy in 2015 to deal with the trauma he experienced growing up. Marinovich said he was too scared of his father to tell the truth about his experiences when he was growing up and constantly talking to the media.
I’ve followed the Todd Marinovich story on and off for about 30 years. Lately, Marinovich seems to be OK doing his art and I have always wished him well.
And while this particular story is a sports story and, probably, some sort of child abuse, the story extends far beyond sports.
After all, what happened to Marinovich also happens to kids in almost any form of endeavor who are made forcibly adapt parental expectations.
To a very small extent, it even happened to me. And I still hear about those family expectations of me every once in awhile.
Which is nothing like the public eye that Todd Marinovich had to deal with but I understand.
What I do know is this: My friend and I have decided on a place to eat tomorrow, the Yelp reviews are very good and I think that I’ll post some food pRon anyway.
After all, there’s this matter of a certain conference that’s coming to Chicago sometime in the middle of July and I’m certain that those that will attend will all want some good eats as only Chicago can provide.

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From ZenTrainer:
This is a top comment from Dfh1, post in in Crimson Quillfeather’s diary “Democratic Party of Virginia?” Or is it “Democratic Party of Republican Danny Marshall?” I especially liked: "Even if this were an R +40 district, Democrats should be running candidates."

This comment by BenderRodriguez in Mark Sumner’s front page post Trump indictment is unsealed, and the contents are wild. (Apparently, I’m not the only one imagining what you can do with the phrase “beautiful mind paper boxes.”)
