June 8th Is Not Really A Sad Day For America. The Rule Of Law Is Working, So I Am Happy. [1]

I’ve been watching MSNBC since Trump’s federal indictment announcement. And I noticed a narrative that at least two people tried to push that this is a “sad” day for America. One is the usual suspect of former Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, and the other was Rachel Maddow, who I expected better from. Lawrence O’Donnell, Andrew Weissmann, and Neal Katyal pushed back on it being a sad day that Trump was indicted. The rule of law is working! NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW! And that is something that should be celebrated.

However, Rachel Maddow was bemoaning the fact that “We are now a country where a former president has been indicted.” Lawrence O’Donnell did not let that slide. O’Donnell brought up that we have been a country that has let criminal presidents not be held accountable for 49 years! As some historians have pointed out, Ford did the country a grave disservice when he pardoned Nixon for his crimes.

Presidents became kings. And it lead to more and more crimes being committed by American presidents. Six years after Nixon was pardoned, Americans elected a liar by the name of Ronald Reagan who decided to violate the law to support a bunch of thugs trying to overthrow a communist government in Nicaragua. Nothing happened to Reagan.

Then Vice-President George H.W. Bush was able to pardon those responsible for the Iran-Contra affair. And some of those people were from the previous Nixon-Ford Administration (Dick Cheney for one). And it covered any crimes committed by Bush with regards to the Iran-Contra affair. Even though Bush was thrown out of office after only one term, Republicans vowed revenge by nominating his son in 2000.

And we got the Bush-Cheney Administration that lied us into an unnecessary war that killed American and Iraqis. And we brought back torture for those we classified as terrorist. And the Middle East is still reeling from this colossal foreign policy mistake.

Anyone notice a theme here? Republican presidents have been running roughshod over the rule of law for decades. And the crimes only grew worse. If Republican presidents had been held accountable for their crimes. we might NEVER have gotten Trump. And Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid refused to hold George W. Bush for his crimes!

Katyal and Weissmann pushed hard on the idea that this federal indictment of Trump vindicates the rule of law and not of men! Both want to celebrate that today. Katyal said the only sadness for this day is that Trump has undermined our democratic institutions! Not the fact that a former president might be held accountable for the damage he has done!

So I am not sure why Rachel Maddow was so blinkered in her point of view. As for McCaskill, she’s a corporate Democrat who probably fears that if a president can be held accountable for his crimes then no one who is politically powerful is safe. And that is something that has driven the fears of the D.C. Establishment. Once the most powerful man in the U.S. is indicted, lord it can happen to congresspeople and U.S. senators.

Oh the horror!

But don’t worry Claire. We will always have the godlike SCOTUS justices who will never face the law over their overt corruption.

But presidents will no longer never face indictments for their crimes, and I will never think that is a sad thing.
