The Morning Paper [1]

First thing every morning, I rush to the door

Eager for the newspaper… not sure of why or what for.

Why is it I’m in such an early morning hurry

when the newspaper is mainly full of trauma and worry.

Well, I don’t want to be ignorant of what’s going on in Ukraine

I want to better understand the stock market’s loss or it’s gain

I want to be informed when I write letters of protest

about gun control, supreme court ethics, and certainly, social justice.

And yes, there’s a crossword that can sometimes amuse

and op ed writers who help me develop my views.

So, when I see newspapers folding or reducing their staff

I know my addiction is working on my morning paper’s behalf.

We need newspapers and they need us badly

Their numbers are growing smaller, daily and….sadly.
