HMF FINAL YEAR ONE GRANT GOES TO PROPUBLICA [1]

The Hug Morenz Foundation For Media Literacy (HMF) is today announcing its final private for its its first year of operation. HMF is proud to be assisting ProPublica with a series of grants to help fund the operations for its new Pacific Northwest Regional Reporting Hub. As with HMF's prior grants, this was decided upon as the culmination of a multi-month vetting process.

"We're very excited to help bring ProPublica's excellent nonprofit, award-winning, independent journalism to our neighborhood, here in the Pacific Northwest," said Mark Morenz-Harbinger, the foundation's executive director. "If we want folks to become 'media literate,' part of that media has to include robust, independent journalism."

In the 15 years ProPublica has been in operation, it has become the largest nonprofit investigative news organization in the country. Their mission is to "expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust by government, business, and other institutions, using the moral force of investigative journalism to spur reform through the sustained spotlighting of wrongdoing."

As of June 2023, ProPublica had earned six Pulitzer Prizes, seven National Magazine Awards, five Peabody Awards, 12 George Polk Awards, two DuPont Columbia Awards and five Emmy Awards. This new regional hub will be ProPublica's fifth nationwide.

Since its inception in early 2022, HMF has committed to nearly a third of a million dollars in grants to organizations in support of Media Literacy.
