What Daily Kos could be. But isn't. (part II) [1]

Yesterday, I stirred quite a discussion with my criticism of Daily Kos’ U.S. domestic policy content not being on par with the excellent Ukraine coverage. First of all, many commenters are correct: there is the occasional hidden gem among the many clickbaity short stories that take up most of the site’s real estate.

The good thing about the conversation that emerged in the comments to my story was more clarity about what is actually missing. I quote from my yesterday’s story of what I like about the Ukraine reporting: “There is no other place where information and opinion are as timely, as accurate and balanced, while never losing sight of the ultimate objective: a clear and decisive win of the Ukraine over the aggressor. “

In short: What we get here on Ukraine is activist journalism at its best. Never losing sight of the ultimate goal while reporting thoroughly, factually and critically. When I translate this to the coverage of domestic policy, I would be looking for the same, instead of making fun of the latest two-legged embarrassment on the right. To begin with, focus on a sweeping 2024 victory against all the appalling figures put forth by the Republicans, while at the same time highlight the obstacles OUR SIDE has to remove internally, and what success stories we can use to make that happen.

To be even more specific: There is absolutely no reason other than Democrats’ failures that so many New York House seats were lost and that George Santos escaped any serious pre-election vetting. There is no reason why Florida is going heavily Republican with that absolutely inept governor, other than for the appalling performance of the Democratic Party in preparing the last election. At the same time, there were wonderful and decisive success stories like the 2020 and 2022 senate races in Georgia, or Arizona and Michigan state elections, where well-organized Democrats were able to win in 2022.

Bringing in the same analysis, rigor and stamina as in the Ukraine coverage and keeping the momentum up until the 2024 election could turn Daily Kos into a major go-to place for all of us who want to once and for all turn the remains of the Republican party into rubble. Rubble from which hopefully something more meaningful can reemerge. (Yes, we don’t want a one-party country.)

This is as much a war like the one in Ukraine, and having the same kind of analytical daily diaries on the progress in this fight would make me the happiest daily reader (and contributor) to the site to a much larger extent than what I currently am.
