SLAVA UKRAINI! A song about War in Ukraine — Artur Lehi, Mar 4, 2022. Video was made in cooperation with the Estonian Defence Forces. English lyrics.

x x YouTube Video A recent AI inquiry told me that my ancestral villages were in Ukraine: Kukkus and Gnadenfeld were villages located in areas that would later become part of Ukraine. Kukkus, also known as Kukus or Kukusse, was a German colony in the Russian Empire. It was established in 1804 and was located in the Ekaterinoslav Governorate, which is now part of modern-day Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in Ukraine. Gnadenfeld, also known as Spasovka or Zaporizhian Gnadenfeld, was another German colony in the Russian Empire. It was founded in 1804 and situated in the Taurida Governorate, which is now part of Crimea, Ukraine. But the AI is wrong. I have a hand drawn map in family records that shows the original villages were across the border in Russia, nearer the Saratov region. Maybe it doesn’t matter now, but my own babushka (I am named for her) had the determination and fortitude to get out of there before being executed, starved or put on a death train to Siberia. A DNA test shows that I have DNA linked relatives in Siberia; it was an unimaginable feeling to learn that they didn’t all die in the Russian extermination program. The only thing grandma would say in English was “I get no good in that country.” She buried six children there before leaving on a ship across the Atlantic to the port of Baltimore in the early twentieth century to start a new life on a new continent. I cheer for Ukraine. Many war songs are on YouTube, and many of them do not meet the Rules of the Road on DKOS. A Ukraine punk band named 100% Bavovna has some great stuff, including a video game dropping bolls of cotton on, um, Russian things. I did not post those here because reasons. Likewise some of the older Ukrainian nationalist war songs. History there was harsh and bloody. Traditional songs are not shy about the gory details. I didn’t post those either. (NOTE — some videos posted here do contain war footage)

UKRAINE WILL WIN - O.Ponomaryov M.Khoma T.Topolya E.Koshovyi Y.Tkach P.Chorny. The version on YouTube has English subtitles. I don’t know why they don’t show up on the embedded video.

Njet Vladimir was darned tough to post here. YouTube kept flagging it as age-restricted and not for sharing. Fortunately, dozens of different YT users have posted it and I finally found one that wasn’t restricted. It has a still picture, though; restricted ones have more graphic video. There are pie fights in the comments from Finland, who claim the origin of the song and concept. (See the comment by Hakkapeliitta below for a link to the original Finnish song, Nyet Molotoff.)

NJET VLADIMIR /Нет Владимир - Ukrainian Anti Russian Song - With Lyrics

Khlyvnyuk’s version of Chervona Kalyna is one of the most popular online. It has been remixed with symphonies, choirs and shared millions of times. The Kiffness version is one of my favorites because all the income from the video goes back to Ukraine.

Ukrainian Folk Song 🇺🇦 ARMY REMIX | Andriy Khlyvnyuk x The Kiffness

Khrystyna Soloviy in Berlin rocks the hell out of that traditional Ukrainian folk song with a few new lyrics. It’s the same one Khlyvnyuk does above, in a very different style.

Oi u luzy chervona kalyna — Khrystyna Soloviy

Little Song for The Moskals - Ukrainian Patriotic War Song (Kоlоmiyka pro Moskаlіv)

BAYRAKTAR - Ukrainian War Song (English subtitles, napisy polskie and other languages) with Ukrainian active duty soldiers. This is a song about a drone. (video contains Bavovna)

Hej, Sokoly, is a traditional song about a young Cossack who mounts his horse to leave for war. His young woman is heartbroken, knowing he will not return. Later in the song, the music slows when he is gravely wounded and asks for wine to ease his pain. He asks his friends to return his body to his beloved Ukraine and bury him near the woman he loves. The incredible logistics of this video make it worth sharing. There are dozens of versions of this song on YouTube, done in many styles and settings.

HEJ, SOKOLY — Ukraine Military Version

This version is set to the traditional skill of sword spinning. You saw a little of this in the Cossack version posted above. Here, you get a full four minute performance.

HEJ SOKOLY — Hej, sokoly! A film by the historical fencing club "Oikumena", Irkutsk, 2016.

HEJ, SOKOLY — Ensemble "Brothers" This one has English subtitles.

Last week there was a wonderful post of Ukrainian music here. It was a wonderful hour and a half to spend listening. Do go and find it if you haven’t listened yet.
