In case you missed the story, fighter jets were scrambled in the D.C. area from Joint Base Andrews to intercept a Cessna Citation V that flew over restricted airspace in D.C. this afternoon.
Apparently, around 2:40 p.m., the FAA lost contact with the Cessna, which had departed from Elizabethton Municipal Airport in Elizabethton, Tennessee, and was bound for Long Island MacArthur Airport in New York. The plane turned around after reaching Long Island and flew on a southwest path. The pilot did not respond to air traffic control.
Around 3:30 p.m., as the Cessna flew directly over D.C., NORAD F-16s were scrambled to follow the plane; the F-16 pilots reported that the pilot onboard was incapacitated. The F-16s went supersonic in the chase, causing sonic booms in the area.
The Cessna eventually ran out of fuel and crashed in a mountainous area near Montebello, south of Staunton, Virginia.

Details on the Cessna aircraft -
x The Cessna jet that crashed outside Virginia was registered to Encore Motors of Melbourne.
When reached for comment by the Associated Press, the president of the company Barbara Rumpel said she has no comment to make.

The Cessna Citation V is a business jet, capable of carrying 7-11 passengers and a crew of 1-2; cruise speed is around 500 mph. Range = 1,404 miles. Price = $5.4 million.

Speculation is that the pilot and possibly the passengers lost consciousness. There have been cases like this before. E.g., the plane crash with Payne Stewart in 1999. en.wikipedia.org/…
According to www.washingtonpost.com/...
Reached by phone, John Rumpel said he was the owner of Encore. Asked whether the plane that crashed was owned by Encore, he said: “To the best of my knowledge.” Rumpel said his “entire family” was on board, including his daughter, a grandchild and her nanny.
John’s wife Barbara Rumpel, the President of Encore Motors, who was not on board the plane, is reportedly an avid supporter of the NRA and has been running for the NRA Board of Directors.
From www.nrawlf.org/… -
Barbara Rumpel’s adventurous spirit led her to her husband, her love of shooting sports and her commitment to defending the Second Amendment. She and her husband are generous supporters of the NRA Whittington Center as Charter Patriot members. Whether it was moving to New York alone as a young woman or partaking in a helicopter hog hunt in later years, NRA Women’s Leadership Forum Executive Committee member Barbara Rumpel has made her way through life being “game for anything.”
The braindead folks on the right, as usual, are posting conspiracy theories on social media.
x Jesus I just saw a tweet about the pilot of that Cessna being unresponsive at the controls - a horrifying and tragic thing to happen - and all these bluecheck cretins were posting gleeful vaccine memes. — Helen Kennedy (@HelenKennedy) June 4, 2023
No matter who was on board, it is an unfortunate and freakish tragedy which will of course be investigated and perhaps some steps will be taken to help prevent such accidents in the future.
