“You were SUCH a pretty baby” has to be some sort of backhanded compliment on par with “She WAS a beauty in her time.”
The pretty baby part is something that all of my relatives still talk about every time I attend a family get-together and it’s usually said about me...and...well…
I remember my baby pictures. Almost always with the goofiest smile on my face. The wavy hair and the “almost” Clark Kent/Superman curl in the front. Kinda chubby, actually. Cherubic, even.
Well...yeah, when I was a baby, maybe I did kinda look damn good, if I do say so myself.
But I haven’t seen a baby picture of myself in...it has to be over 30 years.
Once upon a time Mom had a huge collection of pictures of myself and my brother as babies (who is also described as a “pretty baby” quite a bit...as with me, that is no more!)
As the story goes, my niece took all of my mother’s pictures of my brother and I as kids, cut them up, and used them as a collage.
Now...she has none. She doesn’t even have her own pictures of herself as a young woman.
Now I’m sure that my aunt or some other relative has pictures of me as a toddler.
The oldest picture I have seen recently of myself as a kid was at my first cousin’s funeral on Halloween 2021. It’s a picture of my first cousin (as a baby), 2 second cousins, my aunt and uncle, me, and my brother. It was taken at outside of Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio in 1976.
(My supermodel days were loooooooooooooong gone by then!)
My aunt has a stash of pictures but she doesn’t allow anyone to see them. I am her oldest nephew, so who knows what penance I will have to do to get my hands on old pictures of me but...I’d like to see them so that all can know what a beauty I really was in my time.
In the meantime, here’s my Mom; she says hi.
This 4th of July holiday, I will be in Detroit and on a mission to recover what a beauty I was in my time!
