I noticed an orange and black object while sitting at the Wildlife Refuge (Sardis Lake, MS.). I was able to identify the Orchard Oriole easily. The Mimosa (Persian Silk Tree — Albizia julbrissin) seemed a romantic spot for his mating preparations. I’ll let the photos tell his story.
Checking the right underwing, with a sniff to assure proper odor.
He didn’t neglect the left wing
The “showy” part of his wings got extra attention
Flexing to make sure he was aligned and stylish
His front needed tuning
Digging a little deeper into the task
An annoying itch in the middle of his back got scratched.
A forward lunge to straighten out his back
A final “fluffing” felt good (as his expression shows)
He noticed me watching and gave me a quizzical glance “I look good, yea?”
I felt he was pleased with himself and began his call to potential mates. It never hurts to check a few things between the call and showing up for the date.
A short flight from the Mimosa to a popular feeding station is where he met his blind date. She had ordered lunch for them and was ready to serve his desires. I allowed them their privacy as the soiree began. I didn’t want to add to his nervousness.
“Here baby. I saved a juicy morsel for you.”
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.
I don’t have a bug of the day, but hope somebody will bring one. Please feel free to share your findings. This sure has been a short and sweet time.
