I hereby proposed an international campaign called #giveitawaynow wherein multi-millionaires and billionaires ("Rich People") would donate the majority of their personal fortune(s) to legitimate 501(c)(3) charitable organizations (or the non-U.S. equivalent of same.)
Here is how it would work:
Rich People would subtract their age from the average lifespan for their gender in their native country, keep $1 million for every year they have left to live (statistically speaking) and donate the rest of their net worth to charity by the end of the calendar year.
For example:
Movie director Peter Jackson is 60, has a net worth of $1.5 billion and the average life expectancy for a healthy male in his native country of New Zealand is 81. 81 minus 60 is 21. Therefore, he would keep $21 million to live on for the rest of his natural life and donate the rest of his personal fortune (in this case, $1.479 billion) to charity by the end of the calendar year.
Aside from the fact that giving money to poor people will help them live much better lives, it is also seriously good karma -- so it's not like Rich People wouldn't be getting SOMETHING for their "sacrifice."
Furthermore, conspicuous consumption (e.g., flying around in private jets) is one of the greatest drivers of climate change present in the world today. By shaming/cajoling/convincing/pressuring Rich People into giving away most of their personal fortunes, Earth just might stand a chance of not becoming a dystopian hell planet in the next 50 years.
Finally, if you can't live on $1 million per year, then something is seriously wrong with you (and human civilization in general.)
