So who was Antoinette “Tony” Perry, anyway?
Antoinette Perry [was] an actress, director, producer, and the dynamic wartime leader of the American Theatre Wing. www.tonyawards.com/...
In fact, Perry was one of the founders of the American Theatre Wing, and the year after hear death at age 58 in 1946, the ATW founded her namesake awards, the Tonys, for excellence in the theater.
The theater bug gripped her at an early age.
Born in Denver, Colorado,[2] she spent her childhood aspiring to replicate the thespian artistry of her aunt and uncle, Mildred Hall and George Wessels, who were both well-respected touring actors.[3] She performed at the Elitch Theater near Denver when she was only 11 years old.[4 en.wikipedia.org/...
Naturally, her father disapproved of a life in the theater. But he did send her to New York to study music. There, she pursued her stage career — and it was quite a career.
Now, the Tonys celebrate that career, and the theater. And there are always some amazing production numbers.
This year’s Tony Awards will air on CBS and Paramount+ June 11 at 8 p.m. Eastern
