On a sunny Sunday afternoon, I came across an out of place headstone on the grounds of a tiny rural church in England.

It was that of a James Paul, a young Native American buried thousands of miles away from home. The scope of Native American presence in early modern Europe is not well understood.

He was bought over by a Thomas Houghton of the New England Company.

The New England Company, formally known as the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in New England and the Parts Adjacent in America, was an English organization formed in the 17th century with the goal of promoting religious and educational activities in the American colonies.

The ‘NEC’ was a Christian missionary organization supported by the English state to convert the native people of America, specifically the New England region.

After the American Revolution, they were restricted to operating in Canada.

And they did.
