Millennials (Poking fun)
The age range for Millennials is 27 to 42 years old. Most KTK readers are older than that, so we are most likely to encounter that generation in retail situations…..or one’s own kids. We have recently heard some stories about this group that were somewhat alarming. Gallup had this info:
Gallup has found that only 29% of millennials are engaged at work, meaning only about three in 10 are emotionally and behaviorally connected to their job and company. Another 16% of millennials are actively disengaged, meaning they are more or less out to do damage to their company.
This comports with our stories. “Coming to work is a big drag” . “I don’t feel I’m being appreciated, I’m gonna work from home.” “I just can’t work that early in the morning” Full-time employees doing less than an hour of work for a day’s pay. “I need my comfort animal at this office or I can’t work.”
These are examples of what we’ve heard, but we’ve experienced retail clerks (perhaps not the most exciting job) completely disengaged from customers, never making eye contact, dropping purchases and expecting the customer to pick them up.
This is not new, but to me it’s incredible, because during my working years the behavior and attitude would not have been tolerated for one second.
Not the world’s biggest problem, for sure, but it is encapsulated in this hilarious and probably pretty accurate video:
It’s fortunate, is it not, that we in all other demographics are almost perfect? A burden we proudly carry.
