Reproductive Rights:

Why do so many Black women die during pregnancy and childbirth? One reason: doctors don’t take them seriously.

As some US states debate banning abortion pills, Argentina expands their use.

South Carolina passes 6-week abortion ban; Court puts it on hold pending judicial review.

Indiana doctor faces discipline hearing over 10-year-old Ohio girl’s abortion. Although she never revealed the child’s name, Dr. Caitlin Bernard was fined $3000 and given a letter of reprimand for speaking up on the horror of a 10-year-old rape victim having to leave her home state to end her pregnancy.

Eight more women join lawsuit against Texas saying the state's anti-abortion laws harmed them.

NPR: Some abortion opponents are dismayed that doctors are showing reluctance to work where the best decision for a patient could result in heavy fines, or prison sentences. Former Trump surgeon general Jerome Adams tweeted about realizing that when clinics that provide abortions close their doors, all the other services offered there also shut down: "..."the tradeoff of a restricted access (and criminalizing doctors) only approach to decreasing abortions could end up being that you actually make pregnancy less safe for everyone, and increase infant and maternal mortality." We warned them!

Violence:

An Aberdeen (Scotland) case is the latest in a series that have called into question the sentencing guidelines that compel shorter sentences for offenders under age 25. The crime was a rape and murder committed by a 23-year-old man, and be warned: the violence in this case was ghastly.

Woman shoots and wounds man who came at her with a crowbar.

A woman working on a research station in Antarctica was assaulted by a colleague — and had to work the next 9 months with him before she had the opportunity to leave.

The film Victim/Suspect (trailer) explores cases where sexual assault survivors were arrested on charges of false reporting, as in this infamous case. Ms. Magazine has more on how “DARVO” tactics by police and others in the justice system can lead to victims being wrongly labeled as false reporters.

Workplace Issues:

The 19th has 6 charts showing why women's 2023 equal pay day is not much of a celebration -- In 2023, women on average are earning 77 cents for every dollar earned by White men. "The gender pay gap has barely budged in 20 years." Women's Equal Pay Day was March 14, 2023, i.e., women had to work all January & February of 2023 plus the first two weeks of March to equal men's 2022 pay. On average! Minority women have it worse. e.g., NationalPartnership.org reported that as of Nov 2022, Native American women were paid on average 57% of what white men are paid, So, Native Women's Equal Pay Day will be November 30, 2023. "In other words, it takes Native women 21 months to earn what white men earn in 12 months due to the disparity".

The Star Garden in L.A. just became the only unionized strip joint in the US.

Women were officially banned from combat at the time, but were sent on crucial covert counterinsurgency and intelligence-gathering missions in Afghanistan.

Artificial intelligence is only as “unbiased” as its programmers, part eleventy zillion: An experiment asked an AI program for examples of what professors looked like in various academic disciplines. The results were overwhelmingly pale and male. (See also: AI’s idea of what the “perfect” man or woman looks like.)

Media:

Farewell to the legendary Tina Turner.

The documentary Shiny Happy People explores the abuse and misogyny behind the “19 Kids and Counting” Duggar Franchise, and the Institute of Basic Life Principles, the right-wing Christian organization that they evangelized for.

Poem: “Masculinity” by Megan Fernandes.

Uncategorizable:

From daliykos’s own Hunter: There isn’t a ‘masculinity crisis.’ Conservative men are just babies.

Readers were asked for “guy secrets women don’t know about.” Some were funny (f stereotypical). But I thought everyone knew #16:
