Yeah, that's a TOTALLY perfect artistic statement in Germany. Should go over well. /s
Roger Waters has long been quite a prickly and sour figure throughout his career. It’s no surprise that the split between him and David Gilmour over the future of Pink Floyd is the most acrimonious one in rock and roll history, one that continues unabated to this day even long after the lawyers stopped bickering in court. That the Live 8 reunion set happened at all, despite their bitterness, is something of a miracle.
Of course, Waters has made an ass of himself over the last 15 years for his decision to indulge in anti-Semitism. And odds are that Waters probably genuinely has convinced himself that he isn’t being that, simply because “If my intentions are good, and my longtime stance against fascism is good, that means I can’t be a bigot, right?”
While one could argue, as Waters himself has, that his use of the famed “Hammers” costume during “In the Flesh” has long been a staple of his show and that Germany’s investigation of it is an overreaction because the song and the message of The Wall has always been to criticize and attack fascism and show its evils, he clearly should’ve known that Germany would not take it well whatsoever. I don’t know if he’s done any shows in Deutschland besides the 1990 staging of The Wall between then and now, but if he has done so and did the costume with no prior incident, then he might have a point, but one that does not excuse his decision to poke the bear. Because let’s be honest, what Waters did was deliberately poke a thumb in the eye to get a rise from them. And he’s surprised that they didn’t take it well?
Of course, that’s not the main point at all. The real main point is the fact that Waters has clearly dove in headfirst into anti-Semitism, and either doesn’t realize it or refuses to see it. And given that he’s become such an antiwar absolutist to the point of denouncing Ukraine, clearly his antifascist stance has softened, if not degraded entirely, as a result if he’s going to shill for Putin.
Me personally, I’m as antiwar as they come, but I’m a realist too. I believe there are some situations where, when all else fails, war is the only answer. In fact, I personally believe that America should intervene militarily and rout the Russians back to Moscow, which could be done easily, and end the war swiftly. I hate that fact, and I wish I was wrong about that, but I think it’s quite true, and if anything, America should’ve gotten involved as soon as the invasion began.
Waters, of course, is simply incapable of realizing any of this, and he may very well tarnish his legacy as a result of these actions.
This quixotic fight and stance of his is seen here: variety.com/…
I’d certainly like to hear what people have to say about his attempts to defend himself, especially to break them down and rebut them.
