Musings for Friday - Prophylactic [1]

I'm not going to be talking about what you might think.
Prophylactic. It’s an interesting word. As teenage boys, most of the male readers here, probably snickered when we heard or saw the word prophylactic, thinking to ourselves: Rubber! Condom! Ha ha, giggle giggle. But as adults we should know the word outside of just that context.
The first time I heard the word outside of my juvenile understanding of the word was more than 30 years ago in my veterinarian’s office. My young vet used it to describe some procedures and medication to used for my Corgi’s health. I didn’t snicker. Even though I had never heard anyone use the word in a medical context, I knew immediately what he meant. And since that day, I have found it is often the perfect word when used in context.
There is a disease spreading throughout this country and it has been rampant. It has infected our legislative bodies, our Supreme courts, state and federal. It has infected almost every aspect of American life and culture. The disease is Right-wing, evangelical, white supremacy fascism. I don’t have a cure, but it’s certainly time we start using some prophylactics to stop its spread.
One of those prophylactics is expanding our federal courts. Primarily SCOTUS, but all levels of the federal judiciary.
