The long weekend is starting…not much going on around here. I’ve not been feeling tip top so much of my time has been spent with a book or the tv.

A friend recommended The Mandalorian to me — and I’m so glad he did. I decided it was worth subscribing to Disney+ for a month or two to see it all. It was so good, Ann and I are watching it again after also watching The Book of Boba Fett. Both shows are described as space westerns — and they are. But The Mandalorian is more than that. It’s really about family. And parenting! The Mandalorian becomes a father to little Grogu (who looks just like a young Yoda). How in the world Pedro Pascal acts so well without ever showing his face, I do not know but I was inspired to rewatch the second Kingsman movie just to see him in a different role.

(Pedro Pascal plays the guy with the lasso.)

What else? I’ve been reading some books that riff on Jane Austen. The Murder of Mr. Wickham is a country house cozy mystery in which all of Jane Austen’s characters are gathered together, trapped by bad weather, with the abominable Mr. Wickham who is blackmailing them all. Yup, everybody really hates him — for different reasons but they hate him. It’s really good tale and I’m looking forward to the sequel, The Late Mrs. Willoughby.

In a different vein of Austen-ness, I just finished the first novel of a series by sci fi author Mary Robinette Kowal, Shades of Milk and Honey. This is Regency England with some magic thrown in, a world in which gentle young ladies are expected to master the womanly arts of music, art, and creating magical glamour to beautify the home. Kowal spins a good tale whether she’s writing hard science fiction or this kind of fantasy. I’m hooked.

Before I leave the subject of Jane Austen, I think I’ve mentioned that Ann and I enjoyed the film, Pride and Predjudice and Zombies. It’s a very funny movie based on the book of the same name. We just also saw a very amusing analysis of a fight scene in it by Jill Bearup, a YouTube influencer who specializes in stage fighting. Enjoy!

The weekend begins now. Come in, be comfortable, and share your day, your weekend plans, your menus. What are you currently streaming or reading? This is an open thread.
