Ilya Ponomarev, the political leader of Free Russia Legion

There have been some stories published here recently about the raid by elements of Free Russia Legion behind the Russian lines in Belgorod. There was a bit of discussion about exactly how many of those guys were Nazis, and how many were not Nazis, and what the word “Nazis” even means in this context.

It didn’t help that the commander on the ground in charge of this operation was Kapustin (who also goes by his nom-de-guerre Nikitin), who is, shall we say, a rather colorful character.

But, all in all, I think that operations should be judged by their results, not vacuous speculations on the moral characteristics of people who may have participated in them. Here, no one was killed, and, after the demonstration of its ridiculous vulnerability, Russia was almost certainly forced to divert a significant number of troops to rear-area security, where they will at least do no harm, rather than to murdering Ukrainians, stealing washing machines and getting themselves killed in the process.

So, I think this interview by Ponomarev, whose role is actually to speak on behalf of Free Russia Legion to the world, should clarify some things. I would mainly note that Kapustin’s people are neither representative of the Free Russia Legion, nor can they be separated from it. As Ponomarev said, they’re one battalion out of five. Also, they’re not all Nazis, some of them just have stupid ideas in their heads, as we all do.
