NOT a Gee's Bend Quilt!
In my job as the door prize lady for my quilt guild, I get lot of donations of fabric, patterns, books and the like. The donors trust me to do the best with what they give me, either as door prizes themselves or to raffle off for a fund raiser. But some of them want me to find the right person for the gift, someone who will appreciate and use the item. I do my best.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

For example, a few months ago, my guild president gave me a book that had been sent to her in error and the sender told her to keep it and sent the right one. The one she gave me showed how to make the most adorable monster characters and I knew immediately who should get it. When I offered it to her, she was thrilled! Very happy ending there.
Last month, another member gave me a collection of fabric, a pattern and a short history of the Gee’s Bend quilters. I knew about them and their wonderful quilts. Here is a small bit of info from Gee’s Bend: Shared Legacy:
“Gee’s Bend, Alabama, is home to one of the most important African American quilt-making traditions in the United States. Quilting had begun there by the 19th century, when enslaved women sewed quilts for themselves and their families. As quilters passed down memory, skill, and meaning from generation to generation, they developed both individual and collective artistic practices unique to the community. Their works, which have been shown widely in museums over the past two decades, are celebrated for their soft geometries, bold juxtapositions of color, and inventive use of materials.”
My guild is mostly older white women but not entirely. We have a relatively new member, a young black woman who is just getting into quilting and very excited about it. I took her aside at the meeting last month and asked her if she knew about the Gee’s Bend quilters. She did not. I showed her the package I had been given and asked if she was interested in having it. She looked at it all in wonder, looked back at me, and started to cry! I was overwhelmed. She asked me if we could hug, and I said of course. It was the most wonderful reaction. Here is a link to the info from the Huntington with pictures. Take the time to look at them if you are interested. They are art that is used! I also told her about this exhibit coming to the Huntington in September. I hope she will go with her children. I will be going with Margie.
