Good morning, Crew.
Morning Open Thread is a daily, copyrighted post from a host of editors and guest writers. We support our community, invite and share ideas, and encourage thoughtful, respectful dialogue in an open forum. Please join us.
Jeff Buckley was born to a musical family. Although he was raised by his mother and stepfather, his father was the ‘60s jazz musician Tim Buckley. Jeff only met his biological father once when he was eight. Jeff was raised by his mother and stepfather as, in his own words, “rootless trailer trash.” However, his mother was a classically trained pianist and cellist. His stepfather introduced him to rock albums at an early age. Jeff began playing the guitar at age five.
Buckley spent his early professional years mostly playing guitar with hotel bands. Most of his vocals then were backup but he gradually switched to cover songs. He moved to various club bands. With this, he began to attract the attention of both fans and record company execs. He certainly had the voice but he didn’t feel he was ready to advance to his own music. When he finally did, Grace was his first album. Even this was half covers. It won critical acclaim but, unfortunately, not much air play.
And yet Buckley was still gaining fans. He began writing his second album, My Sweetheart, the Drunk. On the suggestion of a friend he moved to Memphis to record it. at the same time, he also had to chance to return to his first love, playing the club scene.
On the night of May 29th, 1997, Buckley decided to go for a dip in a channel of the Mississippi River, fully dressed. He was belting out Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.” One of his roadies moved a radio and a guitar upshore to avoid the wake of a tug boat. After that, Buckley dropped out of sight. His body wasn’t found until June 4th. His autopsy found no traces of drugs or alcohol in his system.
This is, as always, an open thread.
Note--If anyone is willing to do try their hand with this Morning Open Thread diary, whether weekly or just occasionally, drop either officebss or P Carey a note.
