President Biden has had since January 3, 2023, the start of the 118th Congress, to think about what he'd do when Marjorie Taylor Greene would be the Republican brain behind debt ceiling negotiations. As of today, that is one hundred thirty-seven days. What resulted from Biden's planning for what he knew would happen?
There are mixed and risk-averse messages. One day Biden said we are not negotiating with Republican demands to worsen the lives of vulnerable citizens. Another day Biden said he once voted for work requirements. As for unconventional plans to deal with unconventional Maga Republicans, Janet Yellen says no to a coin because the Fed doesn't like gimmicks. Biden says there's not enough time to invoke the 14th Amendment, yet he's had months to do just that.
Indeed, Greene must love seeing the Democrats struggle to handle what the they have had days and months to anticipate and plan for. In the meantime, Trump is sitting back, smirking, egging the Freedom Caucus on, and enjoying the show, just like he did when he watched on TV his special loved ones ransack the Capitol on January 6th.
Maybe Biden has planned something to prevent the United States and the world from swirling down the drain. It is unfortunate not to know what that might be because, at this point, no one—the sick, the retired, the poor, corporations, countries, world leaders, or middle-class families—can make any plans for the future. The world is on tenterhooks. Biden and the Democrats have had approximately 4.5 months to figure this out. They have thought of something, surely, besides counting on making a deal with Majorie Taylor Greene.
