Orlando has been on the headlines for right-wing extremism as of late. This incident, which involves a “Kill All Gays” message on an electronic traffic sign in the planned community of Lake Nona, is the latest.
20 minutes from my apartment. In a neighborhood where I worked every day for 2 years. This is what emboldened bigotry and extremism look like. We are in a very dark chapter in Florida’s history. pic.twitter.com/0TurnZ0wdE
Or from a group that craves attention from victimhood , like Jussie smollett
A gay man got harassed and threatened in a Florida airport the other night and posted videos on Tiktok. It was a group of teen boys. Florida is gone.
Officials in Orlando have responded to the hateful sign, whilst the Orlando Police Department are still finding out who has perpetuated such naked hatred.
When Carlos Guillermo Smith, a candidate for Florida Senate, saw this, he spoke out on Twitter immediately.
"This terrible message of hatred, a promise of violence, against LGBTQ people, is not only disgusting and alarming, but unfortunately, it's a sign of the hate and division that has taken hold in Florida," Guillermo Smith said.
The city of Orlando and the Orlando Police Department are part of the safe space initiative, a commitment to the safety of all LGBTQ+ residents and visitors.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer shared this statement in response: "Hate has no place in Orlando and this disgusting display is not who we are as a community. To Orlando's LGBTQ + residents and visitors: you are respected and valued here. And we won't be deterred in our efforts to ensure that our city is inclusive for all.”
Orlando police say they are still investigating.
Orlando police ask that if you know anything that can help them find out who did this, call them at 321-235-5300.
