Every Member of Congress

Washington, DC 20510

(202) 226-8000

Ladies and Gentlemen;

Given the anger and vitriol shamelessly spewed by many members of the House and Senate these days, I thought, as a citizen of the United States, it might be worthwhile to take a few moments of my time and yours to remind you of the Six Principles of Effective Governance:

Voters elected you to Congress because they trusted you to represent their best interests, not your desires to grasp and retain personal and political power, privilege, and wealth.

If you have the integrity and courage it takes to work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to proactively create, promote, and implement legislation to serve and protect constituents’ real needs and desires, you’ll willingly practice the following six principles of good governance:

Continually communicate with constituents to identify and understand their evolving concerns and the systemic challenges they face Build and maintain trust by creating and maintaining enduring relationships with constituents and colleagues alike Proactively work with experts to enlist their assistance in forecasting shifting conditions that can potentially impact the quality of life for constituents in particular and all Americans in general Regularly meet with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to discuss and objectively understand their challenges and build consensus to implement viable legislation to address those challenges Acknowledge and utilize lessons learned from mistakes to improve your abilities to implement the right legislation for the right reasons Focus your thoughts, ideas, and efforts on the ultimate, overarching objective of your job in Congress: to create, pass, and implement legislation to address the real-world challenges facing your constituents

Follow these principles, and when your time comes to leave Congress, you’ll be able to honestly say, “I have the consolation of having added nothing to my private fortune during my public service and of retiring with hands clean as they are empty.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

Won’t you?

Hopeful as always,

Davy Z Jones
