Welcome 🌻 to Friday’s Roundup of Good News!
I’m sick of hearing about the Rs all the time, as if they are everything, everywhere, all at once. In fact, last week after listening to Ari Melber host an episode of “The Beat” all about what needs to be done to fix the GOP party — guys, while it’s full of corruption and cowardice, it can’t be fixed — I actually wrote to his show to complain.
But this week the news shifted back to the Ds, thanks to stunning electoral wins in Florida and Colorado, as well as victories in places where it was more expected (e.g. Pennsylvania).
The Democrats are delivering, over and over, in the economy, in infrastructure, and at least in some states, in health care. The blue states, on a per capita basis, are often performing quite well on crime.
It’s OK to report on the corruption and chaos of the Rs, as long as you also remind the world that President Biden is actually president. (In fact, in the Thursday Morning Joe, Scarborough complained about Ds freaking out about a bad poll a couple of weeks ago, and how his friends kept going on and on about it, despite there actually being a lot of good news. No, Joe, you were going on and on about it, but hey, welcome back to optimism.)
Also, the news makes us worry about things that do not happen, at least not to the degree expected. Border stuff. Monkey pox. We heard about these potential problems, and probably the media attention spurred the administration to focus on them. But they have not blown up. Not yet.
I’m hoping the debt ceiling will be a nothing burger as well. My opinion is that Biden has to invoke the 14th amendment, because even if McCarthy were negotiating in good faith (he’s not), it’s not possible for him to get together a vote, because too many of the GOP reps are not acting in good faith.
Come on in, my friends, and see how some of the good guys are flourishing while the baddies are getting punished.

No one here is naïve; we are aware of the many who are fighting to destroy our country. Some of us expected it: the cheating, the lying, the chaos, and yes, even the attempts to cling to power despite the clear will of the people. But we are here to read the efforts and the positive results of those (including us and our fellow gnus) who are working so hard to save our country from those very bad people. We are furious with them for what they are doing and we are letting them know. Remember:
💙 There are more of us than there are of them.
💛 They are terrified when we organize. THERE IS LOTS OF EVIDENCE THAT THEY ARE TERRIFIED!
💔 They want us to be demoralized. The best way to keep up your spirits is to fight. So, take the time to recharge your batteries, but find ways to contribute to the well-being of our country and our world.
🗽 Biden as President ! 🗽
Biden, Harris and their administration have been hard at work. Here are the last week’s posts at the White House briefing room.

SCOTUS lets gun bans stand Robert Barnes Washington Post
The Supreme Court on Wednesday left in place for now Illinois’ new ban on the purchase and sale of AR-15-style rifles and large ammunition magazines, in the court’s first consideration of gun-control legislation since its conservative majority made it more difficult for governments to justify such restrictions. a request from a gun shop owner from Naperville and a national gun rights organization to keep both the state law and a local measure passed by Naperville from being implemented while legal battles continue. The order comes as the nation has recently weathered dozens of mass killings, many of them involving the kinds of weapons Illinois and the city seek to ban. The court without comment turned down a request from a gun shop owner from Naperville and a national gun rights organization to keep both the state law and a local measure passed by Naperville from being implemented while legal battles continue. The order comes as the nation has recently weathered dozens of mass killings, many of them involving the kinds of weapons Illinois and the city seek to ban. It is not unusual in emergency requests for the court not to provide its reasoning. There were no noted dissents to the order.
Hooray, blue wave!
x Some perspective on the blue wave tonight:
A Republican losing Jacksonville (pop. 954,614) is like a Democrat losing Austin (964,177).
A Republican losing Colorado Springs (483,956) is like a Democrat losing Atlanta (496,461).
These are HISTORICALLY HUGE upsets. — Tristan Snell (@TristanSnell) May 17, 2023
Florida students refuse to let a$$hole ruin their graduation ceremony Wonkette
Over the last few months, Ron DeSantis has been working to turn the New College of Florida — a small liberal arts school known to have a very progressive student body — into the "Hillsdale of the South." Hillsdale College being a notably wacky right-wing conservative Christian college in Michigan. This has not gone over very well with the students, many of whom plan to leave next year, whether they are graduating or not. But those graduating feel that they at least deserve a graduation ceremony that celebrates them, not Ron DeSantis. So when it was announced that former Trump advisor, Dr. Scott Atlas would be their commencement speaker, they would hold their own commencement ceremony instead. Atlas will still be speaking at the "official" ceremony, but he will very likely have to tell the inspiring story of all the ridiculous and nonscientific policies he pushed during the height of the COVID pandemic to a room full of empty chairs. As organizers Brian Cody and KC Casey explain on their GoFundMe page: The new administration that has spent the past four months attacking our students and community cannot, in good faith, celebrate our graduating students and their accomplishments. Commencement is supposed to be a celebration of graduating students and the people who have shaped this school to be what it is. And we’re proud of who we are! So, we’re taking the celebration plans into our own hands. We want this event to be a fulfilling and memorable experience for graduating students that keeps the focus on STUDENTS, rather than an administration desperately trying to maintain normality and instill conformity.
Zelenskyy is going to Japan for the G7 meeting (Washington Post), unlike Putin. And before that, Zelenskyy has been going around Europe:
x Must be frustrating for Putin to watch Zelensky’s tour of Europe. Every stop he picks up new gifts. Xi brought nothing to Putin when visiting Moscow. — Michael McFaul (@McFaul) May 15, 2023
Of course, Putin can’t visit many countries because he’s wanted as an international war criminal.
And, according to Anna Nemtsova in an opinion at the Washington Post, the Kremlin is really rattled:
A mysterious drone attack on the Kremlin. A car bombing that wounded a key advocate of the invasion of Ukraine. Four military aircraft shot down in a single day — inside Russia’s borders. If the Ukrainians and their allies wanted to rattle the Russian leadership, it’s working. Never, in more than two decades of covering Vladimir Putin’s regime, have I seen it in such an obvious state of chaos and disarray. These days, Kremlin-watchers don’t have to read tea leaves or decode cryptic utterances from the leadership to spot the signs of intrigue — it’s all out in the open, thanks to Putin confidant Yevgeniy Prigozhin. In one of several recent videos, Prigozhin, founder of the mercenary army known as the Wagner Group, stood over dead Russians in a field and cursed the Russian military leadership, demanding punishment for Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu as well as for Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov. He blamed the two men — both close Putin associates he accused of neglecting supplies for his troops — for “tens of thousands of Wagner dead and injured.”

Jim Jordan’s weaponization attempts has been lobbing duds David Kurtz, Talking Points Memo
Jim Jordan’s sham “weaponization” committee was dealt a blow when the FBI revoked the security clearances of three agents “who either took part in the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, or later expressed views about it that placed into question their ‘allegiance to the United States,’” the NYT reports. Two (Marcus Allen and Stephen Friend) of the three agents are set to testify in Jordan’s circus ring today as among the so-called “whistleblowers” that House GOPers have been touting for months. Allen, Friend, and Brett Gloss have all been suspended by the FBI.
It’s really, really rare for security clearances to be revoked because their allegiance has been questioned.
Also, I know Jim Jordan has been “investigating weaponization” , but in truth, he has been weaponizing his committee. Moreover, the GOP has been paying witnesses to testify:

💰💰Selling pardons? We’ve been hearing a lot about how Giuliani and tRump may have been selling pardons, something which surprises no one, but now we have more information thanks to a lawsuit being filed by Noelle Dunphy, who also has recordings. Joe Sommerlad, The Independent
Now, in a civil complaint filed with the Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday, Mr Giuliani’s ex-employee Noelle Dunphy, 43, alleges that he began sexually abusing her almost immediately after hiring her as an off-the-books business development director and public relations consultant in January 2019, thereafter routinely pestering her for sex, drinking to excess, withholding her salary, bragging about being able to sell presidential pardons for $2 million apiece and engaging in alcohol-fuelled racist rants. Ted Goodman, a spokesperson for Mr Giuliani, told The Independent that his employer “unequivocally denies the allegations raised by Ms Dunph
Sexual harassment is horrible, of course, but apparently Dunphy did not quit her position for at least two years, which does make me wonder about her — especially as she was not getting paid. She seems to be in her 40s now, which means she ought to be old enough to know better. But I’m not an expert in this area. Her information and her recordings are especially interesting.
Special Counsel Jack Smith is working with the National Archives:
For those no longer on Twitter: From Zachary Cohen: CNN Exclusive: National Archives is set to hand over to Special Counsel Jack Smith 16 records showing Trump & his close presidential advisers had knowledge of correct declassification process while in office. And then a comment from Tom Joseph: Trump obviously shared classified documents with third parties. This is a step to undercut Trump's lame defense that he magically declassified them. The stuff he shared/sold will be so secret, that no jury will believe his auto-declassify defense.

🚚 💙 Democrats Deliver 💙 🚚
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill Is Delivering WH Briefing Room — here’s just a small amount you can find at the press site. And yes, I know the Rs helped by voting for this, at least in part, but they did NOT deliver.
Key projects are moving forward across the country – many of which had been waiting decades on the sidelines – thanks to the historic investments from the Biden-Harris Administration. This includes: Brent Spence Bridge : In Ci ncinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky, more than $1.6 billion in federal grant funds will upgrade the existing Brent Spence Bridge and build a new bridge dedicated to interstate drivers to improve traffic along I-71/I-75, a critical freight route from Canada to Florida. After years of failed promises, the project will break ground later this year.
Golden Gate Bridge: In San Francisco, California, more than $400 million was awarded to the Golden Gate Bridge from the competitive Bridge Investment Program to replace, retrofit and install critical structural elements to increase resiliency against earthquakes.

Walk Bridge: In New Haven, Connecticut, the Federal Railroad Administration will break ground this week on the Walk Bridge Replacement, which carries four tracks of the New Haven Line, utilized by Metro North and Amtrak and running between New Haven, Connecticut, and Mount Vernon, New York. The bridge is one of the oldest and most crucial bridges of the Northeast Corridor, and the new structure will enhance safety and resiliency while minimizing delays and disruptions to riders.

Michigan to introduce legislation banning conversion therapy, at least on minors Anna Liz Nichols, Michigan Advance
Legislation in Michigan to ban mental health professionals from performing conversion therapy on minors under penalty of losing their licenses will be introduced this week. Conversion therapy, the practice of intervening to alter an individual’s gender expression or sexuality to conform to heterosexuality, involves psychologically damaging processes, bill sponsor Rep. Jason Hoskins (D-Southfield) told the Michigan Advance. On Thursday, Hoskins said he, along with other representatives and members of the state Senate, will introduce bills to protect minors from such practices.

Texas (!) legislature passes a bill to close a gun background check loophole Jeremy Schwartz Pro Publica
Texas lawmakers have closed a loophole in state law that allowed people who had serious mental health issues as juveniles to legally purchase firearms. On Wednesday, the Texas House of Representatives voted 116-28 in favor of a bill that requires courts to report involuntary mental health hospitalizations of juveniles age 16 and older for inclusion in the federal gun background check system. The bill, which had already received unanimous support in the Senate, comes nearly a year after a ProPublica and Texas Tribune investigation revealed a gap in the law that required such reporting for adults but not for juveniles. The passage of the bipartisan measure, authored by Republican state Sen. Joan Huffman, offers a rare example of gun-related legislation that has cleared the Texas Legislature since last year’s school shooting in Uvalde. It is now headed to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk. Huffman could not be reached for comment. A spokesperson for Abbott did not immediately respond to an inquiry about whether he supports the bill.
Of course, we don’t trust Abbott at all, but maybe all the bloodshed in Texas will get him to sign it.
📥 Actions You Can Take 📤
Tax-exempt organization complaint referrals. 13909. You can fill this out for the NRA and lots of other organizations. How about if some of us white folk go into some of the MAGA churches and video record what they’re saying?
Voting rights. This may be the biggest issue threatening our democracy right now. Besides contacting your representatives at the state and federal level to do the right thing (depending on who they are), you can support and contact these organizations:
ACLU — American Civil Liberties Union
Democracy Docket — founded by Marc Elias, so important in fighting the challenges after the last election.
Fair Fight — founded by Stacey Abrams
🌱Grass roots. Biden and Harris can do the top-down stuff, but we have to support from the bottom. I don’t know how to deprogram 75 million people, but some things have been written about, such as deep canvassing, and lots of people are talking about this. If you know someone (who did not storm the Capitol), then see if you can be pleasant. Instead of trying to reason with them (logic is obviously not their strong point) distract them with something else. We need to remove the sources of lies and to take down the temperature. If we get more of the Rs to wear masks and to get vaccinated and to vote for Ds, the country will be a better place. We need to coax some of them out of the rabbit holes and diffuse the anger and the crazy.
🏃 Run for something. If you want to run for something, but have no idea what to do, these people will help you. They also like money and volunteers to help those people who are running, so even if you’re not in a position to stand for office, you can help. Note: they are especially planning to target the 57 Rs in local governments who participated in the insurrection.
👎 Defund the seditionists. Defund the seditionists. This is a list with companies that sometimes have donated to the seditionists. The list is long. You will recognize many of the corporations, and you probably have a relationship with some — either you are a customer, a shareholder, or maybe even an employee. Contact them and compliment or complain, but let them know you are watching. Forward it to others.

“One good thing” teacher becomes Teacher of the Year Good News Network
Rebecka Peterson can add ‘Teacher of the Year’ to her ongoing classroom ritual of naming one good thing that happened each day. The Tulsa, Oklahoma math teacher brightens every day with a love for her students and a steadfast determination to show the joy that can exist in a classroom. She does this through her One Good Thing blog, where she writes daily about something good that happened in her class at Union High School, and encourages her students to do the same in their hand-written journals.
This is a great habit for building citizens who are less angry, who are more optimistic. Rebecka Peterson was also honored by the Bidens back on April 24.

Blind women and their role in India’s health care system Priti Salian Reasons to Be Cheerful
On a sunny March morning in Bengaluru, Ayesha Banu and Noorunnisa walk up to the stage of Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology. Their white canes folded and held aside, they speak to a packed hall of students and teachers about their work as Medical Tactile Examiners (MTEs). “We assist doctors in detecting the early signs of breast cancer in women,” Banu speaks into the mic. “Using the first two fingers of both hands, we examine women’s breasts for abnormalities.” She explains that blind women like herself and Noorunnisa are especially well-suited to this profession because of the “high tactile sense in our fingertips, which helps us find tiny lumps in the breast.” Banu and Noorunnisa (who goes by one name) are based at Cytecare, a cancer hospital in Bengaluru. They often travel around India to raise awareness about the significance of early diagnosis of breast cancer and to conduct routine tactile breast examinations at workplaces, universities, NGOs, and most importantly, rural communities, where there is little access to healthcare.
🐶 🔥 Dog saves neighborhood Sydney Page, Washington Post
About 2:45 a.m., Charlie began barking relentlessly. McCollum and his wife were sleeping soundly and awoke to the commotion. McCollum decided to take the dog out to the yard, thinking Charlie might have to relieve himself. But he didn’t. The barking got louder and more persistent. “I was afraid he was going to wake the neighbors,” said McCollum, who has two children, ages 10 and 13. “I was a little frustrated.” Charlie refused to come back inside, which was also unusual for him, and he continued barking toward one corner of the yard. McCollum checked out what the dog was fixated on. That’s when he saw a faint orange glow and plumes of smoke two streets away. He brought Charlie inside, put on shoes and sprinted to the scene, where he saw a growing blaze. An RV between two homes was on fire, and the flames were starting to spread to the exteriors of the adjacent houses. McCollum called 911, then pounded on the front doors of both homes, yelling for the residents to wake up.
Dogs know. They must be so frustrated with us humans at times! Anyway, if a service dog approaches you — something they don’t often do — follow it. It probably wants you to help its human.
More dog! Dogs and babies know how to have fun!
