Brave, brave Sir Robin!
Josh Hawley is largely known for two things: raising his fist in support of the January 6 rioters, and running away from them a few hours later. Along with that, he’s also (in)famous for insisting that American men have lost their masculinity and need to get it back:
Sen. Josh Hawley claims masculinity is under attack. This historian disagrees (Nov 11, 2021)
In a keynote speech at the National Conservatism Conference last month, Hawley accused the political left of seeking to redefine traditional masculinity as toxic, and called for a "revival of strong and healthy manhood in America." "This is an effort that the left has been at for years now and they have had alarming success," he said. "American men are working less, they are getting married in fewer numbers, they're fathering fewer children, they're suffering more anxiety and depression, they're engaging in more substance abuse."
Now Hawley is out with a new book, Manhood: The Masculine Virtues America Needs (link deliberately omitted). I will quote Rebecca Onion’s review in Slate: Man Overboard Josh Hawley’s long-threatened tome about American masculinity is here. Savor it with me.
[T]o judge by this strange and ineffective book, [Andrew] Tate is, apparently, the only actually bad man in the world. Everyone else—every miserable man in America, of which there are plenty—just needs to read a book like this, full of dense Bible stories, sentimental tales about Hawley’s Midwestern childhood, and potted right-wing histories of the French Revolution, and he’ll be fine.
But the line that really caught my eye and moved me to post this short diary was this one:
And like almost everything Hawley does, the book is an epic disaster. Why did a man who is probably our leading national pipsqueak decide that promoting manliness was his ticket to political power? [emphasis gleefully added]
The ads just write themselves!
