Natural gas flame
One of our main fuels is natural gas so lets take a look at how it is used. First we start with world consumption by region. These areas are overlapping so this does not add up to 100%.
The next chart shows usage by country. The first five countries use over one half of the natural gas.
So let’s look at the US total gas consumption.
The next graphic zooms in on the sector consumption from the chart above. Starting from the bottom we have vehicle fuel which is almost nothing. Lease, plant, and pipeline is gas used to process and transport gas. Kinda interesting that the natural gas industry powers itself separate from the other energy sources. Residential and commercial usage parallel each other and are surprisingly flat since the 1970s. I don’t have an explanation for that aside improvements in efficiency like eliminating pilot lights. Otherwise that is a big surprise to me.
Industrial usage goes up and down a lot, and for a long time was the biggest user of gas until 2007 when the electric power sector zoomed past into first place.
The amounts and percentages for 2022 are shown below. This gives an idea of how much consumption is reduced by transitioning each sector. Both the commercial and residential sectors mostly use gas for space heating, water heating, and cooking food. All three of these can be transitioned to electricity and we would see a reduction of usage around 10,000 billion cubic feet. That would be number four in the chart showing consumption by country. Just our residential sector usage alone would be number five — more than everything Canada uses.
It’s been a gas researching and writing about this topic — enjoy spring!
