It is not often I get myself into a really bad jam by opening my mouth when I shouldn’t, but when I do, it tends to create a big disaster. Let me tell you the tale of this one.
During the pandemic, my sister told me about a candy themed vacation in Florida outside of Orlando she wanted to rent with a bunch of people. I went and looked at it and was interested. I noticed the site listed a few other houses a couple which were game themed. I also noticed the earliest free dates for the different choices were more than a year out. As the pandemic was beginning to subside, I thought about these houses again and considered it might be something fun to rent because we could stay there multiple days with friends and family and be safe as long as everyone tested before arrival. Late last year, I went back to site to look at the places to see which one I most preferred and the dates of availability. I chose the Great Escape Parkside for two reasons. First, it had a room with an Atari and Colecovision consoles; and two, it accommodated the most people.
I checked the availability to scope out some options for us. I had to work around my sister’s teaching schedule. The options were February break 2024, Veterans 2023 or late August 2024 which coincided with my birthday. Because late August is the low season for Floridian vacations, it also happened to be the cheapest which is why we chose Aug 25-29.
I knew going in the biggest issue would be finding enough people to make the cost reasonable as we would not only need to pay for the house itself but food, drinks and all incidentals. The house holds 54 people so if we could fill it, the cost for the 4 nights would likely be around $250 per person. A very reasonable amount imo. I started inviting people and we were quickly up to 20 people confirmed or nearly so. However, this is where my big mouth got me into trouble.
I play one of those smart phone building/war games where you are in a guild with people from around the world. I became friendly with one member and we even met up a couple of times, irl. Once here in NY and once where he lives in London England. (I actually stayed with him there.) I decided to invite him to come to my birthday trip and talked a bit about in chat. This is where my big mouth got me in trouble.
One of our other members, who also lives in England but not London, was online and I, in my mind, jokingly invite her and her husband also. I truly never expected her to want to travel all the way to Florida to attend a birthday for someone she never met and didn’t even know their real name (I use a fake name online). I went onto the game earlier today and say her and the person I met a couple times talking about my birthday event and saw her tell him she was planning to attend and looking into finding someone to watch her kids. Considering she has not met up with the person who lives in her country, I don’t get why she and her husband would want to travel be with a large of people she has never interacted with except me and that’s only online.
Who knows what will actually happen. Maybe they come, maybe they don’t. It's just very weird to me.
Tonight’s question: when was the last time your mouth wrote a check you didn’t expect to cash?
