Vestige of Someone I Once Loved Who Once Loved Me
Hey
I went to Boston the other day
and lingered at the spot I last bumped into you
there by the Rose Garden in the Fens
so many years ago
you told me you were doing contracting
now
had hired a whole bunch of Vietnamese
which of course I loved to hear and you knew that
you told me how resourceful they were
and of course I knew that
my having lived there in their country
for 13 months of another life
you were so proud to say you paid them well
gave them health insurance
you said you remembered things I'd talked to you about
a long time before when you were so young
and I was older
about loving people and shit
about loving first what is free
because free cannot be taken
from you
people liking so much taking
about loving the woods trees
silhouetted leaves in the sky
and the moment you are in
lying in the grass in the sunshine
by the lakeside
or walking together there
sharing our gift
of this moment
making it ours
you said you were with someone now
older of course
like me
whom you loved
and you said laughing how you loved to
no need to remind me
I know what you love
my being an aficionado of that myself
I went to Boston the other day
and lingered there where we last bumped
remembering the first time we met
after our eyes had spoken
your eyes
your mouth your smile
your heart
the music of your voice
“Hi handsome kid” “Hi handsome man”
your body in my arms
your bareness tight against mine
me pulling your ass closer
the days we'd spent together
the nights
reading Leaves of Grass
between making love
remembering now what you were like
inside and outside
and trying to grasp a vestige
of the last time we spoke when
when wisp
wisp
the vestige was there
an invisible swirling wisp
about me
brushed my cheek
caressed my heart
my expression lightened
my insides smiled
as I told myself I must go back there
another day
and look for you
or hope again for a vestige
of the last time we bumped
