John is my friend in Ghana who works to help those who come to him in desperate situations. He tries not to turn anyone away but of course there is only so much money and so many in need. It is a constant burden on my heart. But we do the best we can.

On December 1st of last year sixteen year old Doris came to John's house in the middle of the night asking for help. Her father had cruelly beaten Doris' mother, Florence, and threw the mother and Doris both out of the house. Added to the beating, her mother has asthma and is not in good health at the best of times.

They were sleeping in a local school under truly intolerable conditions. John went to check on the mother and was appalled. The father had literally stomped on Florence with his feet and she was very injured.

We managed to get them into a safe place and soon afterward the poor woman fell and dislocated her knee. This on top of the fact that they had no food and no way to earn any.

This was during the time when Zenabu was so ill from her pregnancy www.dailykos.com/... and we didn't have much extra money to be able to help. But we managed to get her into a hospital and had her knee reset.

John is truly a wizard at helping people even with very little money to work with. I don't know how he managed it, but he got Doris into a beautician school where she could learn a trade. He paid about half down and promised to pay the other half at graduation. John hasn't said anything about either Doris or Florence since then. Hopefully they are doing okay.

This has been on my mind lately.

I worry about the girls and young women in the refugee camp because they often turn to prostitution as their only way to survive, and from that point their lives only get worse. No blame to them, they have literally no other way to live, but it is a shame and a waste. I do not want that to happen to Doris.

I am afraid to ask John about Doris and Florence because there is little we can do for them right now and I am not sure I want to hear what is happening with them. But we will do the best we can.

I know the babies we have been caring for are important, but every good child deserves favor.
