As of the time I write this, more than 95% of the election results are in.
Incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is currently sitting at 49.52%, while his main opponent, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, is at 44.76%.
If Erdogan can get enough votes to clear 50%, he will win the election free and clear, with no need for a runoff election. As you can see from the above numbers, he is less than half a percentage point away from that, but also, there are not many votes left to count.
If no candidate reaches 50%, it will mean a runoff election between the top two candidates.
Stay tuned, folks. Since coming to power, Erdogan has pushed Turkiye’s secular democracy towards increasing authoritarianism during his tenure and has often been a thorn in the side of the US and NATO. If he were to lose his seat, it could have some profound effects to international relations.
Sorry for being so brief, but just wanted to get the headline out there so people’s radar is up to keep an eye on this.
