One hell of a solution.
Moving forward, I will post this diary as events warant it — and importantly, as time permits it. So, it won’t necessarily be on Sunday evenings ET as I have typically done, but could be during the week. In recent months I have posted such “Breaking News” diaries when, for example, Fox News settled its lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems and the day Trump was indicted in March by NY District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Some of you DK oldtimers will remember that I first started this series in 2009 after receiving permission from two cartoon syndicates to post editorial cartoons for free on this blog. I did it almost weekly for two years untill 2011. Additionally — well before Markos started subscribing to cartoonists like Jen Sorensen, Nick Anderson, Lalo Alcaraz, and others — I also used to post a whole lot of cartoons in diaries written by others. More so than the current version, my diaries also had a great deal of political and historical analysis on a wide variety of subjects. Suffice it to say, it was an extremely time-consuming exercise! I revived this series in August 2022 and since that time, I have posted over 80 such diaries — almost 2 per week! I am not ending this diary series, but due to increasing work and other demands in real life, will post diaries on an altered schedule. Thanks for your support. I’ll try to post Part 2 of this diary between 8:00-10:00 pm ET. When I do, I’ll post the diary link right here.
Does a Political Solution Exist?
In addition to posting one just this last Sunday evening, I have devoted multiple weekly diaries to this national sickness afflicting the country in the past three months.
While elected officials might have a solution — no indication that anyone has answers other than accusing others of inaction — it’s becoming abundantly clear to me that it will take a serious national gun reform movement to achieve the desired change. Simply banning this or that type of weapon or placing some kind of band-aid restrictions might help. Realistically, nothing short of re-examining an 18th-century constitution and seriously working toward modifying or repealing the 2nd Amendment will resolve this problem.
It will not be an easy task and require an unpcedented effort by concerned citizens.
Changing laws will definitely help; reversing a certain kind of attitude toward gun use is what is needed in the long term. It’s probably a decades-long project to change hearts and minds — and may well be unattainable given current political divisions in the country — but other incremental solutions are hopelessly inadequate.
How many more calls for “thoughts and prayers” should we heed before we understand as a nation that what is needed is radical change? A permanent solution to this national disease is nowhere in sight. Unless a great deal of pressure is exerted on elected officials by a forceful national gun reform movement — remember FDR’s famous exhortation, “Make me do it?” — nothing much of substance will change anytime soon.
Are enough Americans up to this task? As they say, time alone will tell.

Gun Worship This really is sickening. Where do they find such white trash to become elected members of the US House of Representatives?
x pic.twitter.com/WLB8zW5Y5J — Mike Peters (@mikebpeters) May 5, 2023 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has nominated 18-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. The medal is the highest award from Congress and is given for distinguished achievements and contributions by individuals or institutions. Rittenhouse was acquitted of all charges on Nov. 19 after testifying he acted in self-defense in the deadly Kenosha shootings that became a flashpoint in the debate over guns, vigilantism and racial injustice in the U.S... Greene's resolution says the teen protected the city during what she called a "Black Lives Matter riot." The measure requires two-thirds of Congress to approve it. If it's approved, Rittenhouse would join a list of recipients that includes people like Mother Teresa, George Washington, and Nelson Mandela. Link
