In researching a story for my newsletter about a college baseball player in Texas, I found out that there were, not one, not two, not three, but four separate incidents of Little League baseball games being threated by stray bullets.
Of course, that makes five separate incidents where baseball players became target practice for miscreants.
In a previous installment of “As the Chamber Turns” I pointed out that we are now to the multiple matching obscure description stage of gun violence in this country. That is to say, if there is something as odd as “Being shot while trying on a swimsuit at a retail store” there is probably more than one instance of it. Or perhaps, “Being shot while trying to take your pet for rabies shots.” Probably more than one instance of it.
It just seems unfathomable that something so mundane as Little League games has multiple instances of gun violence affecting them but here we are.
What shall we call this stage of national gun violence?
How about the, “Why is the center-fielder wearing body armor?” stage.
In California, last week:
The San Marcos Sheriff’s Office says no one was injured in the incident, which occurred just before 8 p.m. Monday near Mission Sports Park in San Marcos. A surveillance video from behind home plate and released by the sheriff’s office shows the bullet causing dirt to kick up near second base.
In North Carolina, last year:
Wilson Police Department responded to calls about an active shooter at Gillette Athletic Complex on Corbett Avenue at around 10:30 a.m. At the time of the call, the baseball tournament was in progress. Upon arrival officers said they spoke to attendees who stated they heard several gunshots. An unoccupied vehicle that was hit by the gunfire was parked in a nearby parking lot. Police determined that the incident was not an active shooter but a shots fired in the city limits investigation.
In Florida, last year:
Police responded to reports of someone pointing a gun at people near Northwest First Street and Rock Island Road, at approximately 12:46 p.m., Sunday. Surveillance video showed several dozen children and coaches at a close-by little league baseball field running when the shots rang out. “I was at the pool and just lounging, and all of a sudden, I hear three big, loud gunshots,” said neighbor Luanne Cosgrove. “I said, ‘I think something happened.'”
In South Carolina, last year:
A Little League game in South Carolina descended into chaos Monday evening after dozens of gunshots were fired in the parking lot of the North Charleston baseball field where the game was being played. Video of the incident captures the moment shots erupted, sending everyone on the field — players and coaches alike — running for cover.
This is mind boggling. This is a level of stupid that makes me think velcro will force shoelaces out of the marketplace, for lack of people capable of tying them.
We are now to the point where we need subheadings for our subheadings. Are we going to someday need to have a section called, “People shot while eating frozen desserts at a mall” with these subheadings?
“People shot while eating frozen desserts at a mall”
-Shot while eating Gelato
-Shot while eating Sorbet
-Shot while eating sugar free..
And so forth.
Look I know this is anything but funny, but my sarcasm is how I manage my anger. And believe me, I am angry.
Not once playing baseball did I ever have to worry about, or even consider the idea that I might get my head blown off holding the ball in my change-up grip.
It goes without saying we do owe our children so much better.
It’s just that too many think the NRA is worth more.
