I ate my breakfast alone, sitting on the couch and scrolling through instagram on my phone. I looked up with a frown. Normally Freddie would be sitting next to me, patting my arm and looking heartbreakingly hopeful for a lick of cream cheese.

I set my bagel down on my plate and stood, brushing crumbs from my fingers. “Where’s Freddie?” I asked the room. It didn’t take long to find him.

He was curled up on the floor in a patch of sunlight from the skylight.

I stood over him, careful to not block the light. He was so damn cute. I bent over to stroke his fur.

He woke with a surprised little chirp and relaxed when he saw it was just me. “Human,” he complained. “Sleeping.”

“I know,” I said. “I just miss you. Can you come sleep in the other room with me?”

“Sunshine,” he murmured, closing his eyes.

“You found some, alright,” I agreed. I straightened with a sigh and resigned myself to being cat-less for the near future.

After finishing my last swallow of coffee I stood and took my dishes to the kitchen. I washed up, adding my and Freddie’s breakfast dishes to the dishwasher. It was time to start the day, and I had a list of things to do.

I really just wanted to relax, though.

Poking my head out of the kitchen, I spotted Freddie. He hadn’t moved, but the sunshine had. “Poor boy,” I said, walking over to him.

He opened his eyes and looked around. “Sunshine,” he said, still half asleep and confused.

“It moved,” I explained, pointing to the square of sunshine on the wall. “It does that.”

He stood and walked to the wall. He went up on his hind legs and stretched against the wall, his arms reaching toward the ceiling. Half his body was in the light and I wished I could snap a picture.

He dropped to four legs again and walked toward the back door. I followed.

"I should go to the gym,” I said, sitting on the couch. I looked over at him and patted the seat next to me. “Come sit with me,” I said.

Freddie ignored me, walking over to the one cat bed that was bathed in sunlight. He stepped onto it and carefully turned in a tight circle, settling down in a ball.

“I’m never going to win over the sunshine, am I?”

“Nope.”

Unable to help myself, I crouched down in front of my sleeping cat. He was in a ball with one paw over his eyes. I gently petted him.

He rolled into an even tighter ball, twisting his head to point his chin at the ceiling. “Such a good boy,” I said.

His fur was bathed in sunlight and gleamed, and he had a happy cat smile on his face. “Such a pretty boy,” I said.

“Love this boy,” I said.

“Love sunshine,” he said back.

Sometime later I let myself into the house, arms full of bags of groceries. I had decided that sitting around all day watching Freddie sleep was not the best use of my day off and had tried to get a few things done.

I walked past Freddie’s row of beds and noted that he had moved at some point, choosing the bed with the most sunlight.

It was nearly dinnertime so there wasn’t much left.

He was trying, though.

Once the groceries were put away, I grabbed a bottle of juice and headed for the couch, deciding to check the news. Freddie stood as I walked by, stretching and meandering after me. He climbed onto my lap as soon as I sat. “Looking for attention?” I asked, automatically petting his still sun-warmed fur.

“No more sunshine,” he said, sadly.

"It’ll be back tomorrow,” I reassured him, rubbing between his ears.

“I guess you’ll have to keep me warm,” he said, curling up on my thighs.

“I’ll be your sunshine,” I told him. “Whenever you want.”

Happy Caturday, Peeps! The long days are finally here, and Freddie could not be happier.
