Pandemic Observations -- May 10, Top 40+ Nations (Fading Embers?): [1]

The Road Ahead?

With the “official” ending of both the CDC’s public health emergency in the US and the WHO’s global health emergency this week, the Covid-19 pandemic continues to fade further into endemicity. Despite a few remaining embers in Europe, Asia, and the US(?), it’s fairly clear now that barring the rise of a radically different variant that can successfully evade both existing vaccines and prior exposures, we won’t be seeing any further waves to rival those of 2020-22.

This may be small comfort for the millions worldwide (both registered and unregistered) whose lives were cut short by this terrible pandemic, or the many tens of millions more still suffering from the debilitating effects of long-covid — not to mention all the economic upheavals resulting from necessary but unpopular public health measures such as travel restrictions, social distancing, and both mask and vaccine mandates — those of us who have managed to survive relatively unscathed thus far can now at least hope to contemplate a return to something approaching normality.

On the plus side of the ledger, the revolutionary new mRNA vaccines developed in record time to cope with the pandemic more than proved their worth, and hopefully will not only make dealing with the next pandemic more manageable (of which there will be no shortage of future pandemics to deal with), and may even pave the way for treating various cancers and other diseases that are currently untreatable.

With the increasing infrequency of reliable data updates, I’ll probably draw these weekly columns to a close now and focus more on longer-term trend reports such as my Circles of Hell series. Good luck everyone, and a special thanks to those who have followed these data dumps and observations over the past 3+ years!
