After a jury in New York produced a nuanced but devastating verdict in the E. Jean Carroll vs. Trump case — they did not see enough evidence for rape, but they did for sexual assault and defamation to the tune of $5 million — Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) swooned like a bobbysoxer at a young Sinatra concert. Tuberville said the verdict “makes me want to vote for him [Trump] twice” in 2024. He added,
“They’re going to do anything they can to keep him from winning. It ain’t gonna work...people are gonna see through the lines, a New York jury, he had no chance.”
It would be easy to write Tuberville off as a moron whose entire world was college football until he became a politician in 2020. But that would unfairly judge the man based on a stereotype. So I will let his own words establish that he is an idiot.
After his election to the Senate, a reporter from the Alabama Daily News asked Tommy if he thought a Republican Senate could get anything done now the House and the Presidency were in the hands of the Democrats.
This analysis prompted Tuberville to answer he did not care "if you’re a Republican or Democrat” and that he had been given a mandate to help people. He added,
“Our government wasn’t set up for one group to have all three branches of government — wasn’t set up that way. You know, the House, the Senate, and the Executive.”
Let us start by noting that after the two Georgia runoff elections produced Democratic winners, the Democrats captured the Senate. More importantly, concerning Tuberville's mental challenges, a middle schooler could have pointed out that he had missed the judicial branch.
Talking about stereotypes, this man who grew up in Arkansas and spent most of his adult life in Alabama casts New York as the home of duplicitous city slickers looking to drag down a good old boy (who ironically comes from New York).
A rational thinker can easily dismiss this nonsense by pointing out that if this jury had wanted to fix the result, they would have found Trump culpable of rape.
Tubberville does not just have the hots for sexual abusers he is also a fan of white nationalists in the military. This Senate Armed Services Committee member told WBHM National Public Radio that the Biden administration is “destroying” the military by trying to get rid of ideologies like those on the far right. When asked if white nationalists should be allowed to serve in the military, Tuberville replied ,
“They [the Biden administration] call them that. I call them Americans.”
After some more boilerplate about how Biden sucks and how the military cannot meet its recruiting goals, Tuberville added,
“So if we want to talk about looking weak, that’s where we’re going to look weak. We cannot start putting rules in there for one type, one group, and make different factions in the military, because that is the most important institution in the United States of America, and our allies, is a strong, hard-nosed, killing machine, which is called our military.”
The US military is 48.4% minority. I would not be surprised if, despite his Armed Services Committee membership, Tuberville still imagines that the vast bulk is Southern white men.
Tuberville’s best season as head football coach at Auburn came in 2004. The team went undefeated and won the Sugar Bowl. Here is a photo.
Did Tuberville think that excusing whatever white nationalists were on the squad improved unit cohesion?
Tubberville’s Senate office quickly realized Tommy had stepped in it — again. They issued a press release explaining that Tuberville had not said what he said,
“Sen. Tuberville’s quote that is cited shows that he was being skeptical of the notion that there are white nationalists in the military, not that he believes they should be in the military. He believes the men and women in uniform are patriots. (Defense) Secretary (Lloyd) Austin seems to think otherwise, subjecting them to extremism training as his very first act in office. That cost us four million man-hours.”
I suppose the excuse “My boss is a moron, but he is not a racist" Is the best you can do when you work for an idiot. Tuberville has never served in the US military, but as a long-time head football coach, he must be aware that a team of players who respect and trust each other will be more successful than a team where some members disparage others.
And if he does not, he should watch “Remember the Titans.” Unfortunately, I do not have any suggestions on how Tommy can add IQ points.
