We have the habit of watching the news in the evening. Last night the weatherman warned us that after noon the next day (that’s today) there would be severe thunderstorms with the possibility of large, damaging hail.

We just bought a new car a year ago, a brand-spanking new Mazda CX-9 in their Soul-red Crystal color. Handsome beast! However, I’ve been using the garage for some household woodworking projects, and we’ve been parking in the driveway. So I spent half an hour re-organizing everything in the garage to make room for the car (a lot of room, the thing is huge). Then I made a quick run to the store for some treats for my wife’s classroom. When I came back, I drove straight into the freshly cleared-out garage and closed the door.

Then all hail broke loose!

Crash! Clatter! We heard hailstones bouncing off the roof, windows, and aluminum pergola. I noticed the largest hailstone I’d ever seen on the back porch and took a picture of it:

Hailstone as big as my thumb

Then it let up for a few seconds.

Then it started hailing in earnest. Here’s a video of a 14 seconds of hailstorm as seen through our sliding glass door: photos.app.goo.gl/…

A bit of lightning (still frame from a few seconds of video of the hailstorm)

As soon as it stopped we ran out and grabbed the biggest hailstones I’ve ever seen!

Now THOSE are hailstones!

In the morning, the Mazda was tucked snugly in its garage. The 2006 Honda was parked out on the curb, under a willow tree and covered leaves, branches, and hailstones. I’m hoping it was somewhat protected by the tree. Neighbors were out looking at their cars aghast at the hail damage. I saw at least one shattered windshield. Folks were still in the point-and laugh stage of shock, standing around comparing notes and picking up hailstones.

I’m going to listen to the weatherman from now on!
