A couple of years?

A civilian choking a man to death instead of the police?

A subway instead of a street?

Loud hunger and distress instead of counterfeit money?

Bystanders allowing, even abetting, one death and bystanders pleading for mercy in the other? ∫

A reactionary response to prove that Black Lives DON’T Matter?

(Looking at you, NYTimes and all the other “news” outlets, like CBS News, who refused to name Jordan Neely’s killer*, Daniel Penny, for days after his name was public.)

The biggest difference I can see is how little George Floyd has been remembered in the death of Jordan Neely and that chills me to the bone.

PS: I am old enough to remember an episode of the old “Superman” TV show with George Reeves in which wrestling choke holds are deadly was the major plot point.

I am also old enough to remember the controversy over police choke holds being “outlawed” for NYC police.

I am old enough to remember Derek Chauvin applying pressure with, probably, the same relaxed demeanor that some bystanders describe Daniel Penny having.

No excuses but then, there never really are and, too often, they aren’t really needed.

∫ Confusion, Shock, and the Bystander Effect on the Train Where Jordan Neely Was Killed

* I understand that Daniel Penny is more liable to be charged with manslaughter not murder but, in practical and real terms, he choked the life out of Jordan Neely, he killed him.
