Orange Honeysuckle, Lonicera ciliosa. CAPRIFOLIACEAE
Spring in the Pacific Northwest has been delayed several weeks by unseasonably cool weather over the past few months. It still hasn’t really warmed up, even though we’ve gotten the occasional warm day recently. According to my phenology records (ie date stamps on photos), all these native flowering plants are running between one and three weeks behind.
Here for the record, are stages I’m seeing in the first week of May in flowering plants around my neighborhood. Most are just starting to bloom (except salmonberry in March, nettle and serviceberry in April).
Western Spring Beauty, Claytonia lanceolata
PORTULACACEAE
Fragrant Fringecup, Tellima grandiflora
SAXIFRAGACEAE

URTICACEAE
Salal, Gaultheria shallon
ERICACEAE
Red elderberry, Sambucus racemosa. CAPRIFOLIACEAE
and
Salmonberry, Rubus spectabilis ROSACEAE
Sea thrift, Armeria maritima
PLUMBAGINACEAE
Pacific crabapple, Malus fusca
ROSACEAE
Vine maple, Acer circinatum
SAPINDACEAE
I’m seeing a ton of tent caterpillars this year, similar to last year. Before 2022 it had been quite a few years since a major population boom.
The tent cats are later than usual this year. Probably following the late leaf out.
Tent caterpillars on Nootka rose. This is shaping up to be a big tent cat year

Partly sunny in the PNW islands today. Calm wind. Daytime temps in 50s, nights in 40s.
