In this eastern Oklahoma town in the Choctaw Nation, Ms. Spearman wants her early-grades students to have some materials to help with science and math.

PROJECT #1 Project: Classroom Manipulatives Resources: Help me give my students this set of resin insects for my science center, as well as reading blocks, teaching scale and math game. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Quinton Elementary School, Quinton, Oklahoma Total: $173.92 Still Needed: $ 173.92 $123.92 Project description by Ms. Spearman: Please help me fund these classroom manipulatives for my awesome group of students. They love to explore and learn through hands-on manipulatives. The resin insects would make a great addition to our science center by allowing the students to observe insects up close without fear of being stung. Along with the resin insects, the balance scale will allow for trial and error for students to gain understanding of weights and balances. The math manipulative and the CVC activity will promote group learning along with independent exploration. In advance I appreciate your consideration in helping fund these great additions to my classroom. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! This isn’t the bugs-in-resin collection being requested, just part of someone’s own collection, but they have some good ones. Warning! Spider in row 3! x x YouTube Video This clever frog balance toy is also requested. x x YouTube Video

This is a pretty ambitious project for us, but there’s plenty of time. Mrs. Parks teaches early grades in an Alaskan village of about 400 people, on the Bering Sea. She needs hands-on phonics materials to help her students learn to read.

PROJECT #2 Project: All Hands on Deck for Reading Resources: Help me give my students hands on activities for kindergarten students to help build phonics skills. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Manokotak School, Manokotak, Alaska Total: $612.67 Still Needed: $ 412.67 $362.67 Project description by Mrs. Parks: My students are so special to me. They are from a small village in Alaska. It is a predominately low income community, however these students deserve to have hands on activities to help them build their phonics skills. Phonics is the foundation to building literacy skills. The materials in this project take my students from the basic literacy skills of learning letters to being able to build 2+ letter words. It also provides opportunities to go from reading words to reading sentences. The hands on supplies in this project will allow my students to build independent reading skills . By providing these activities it gives small busy hands an educational tool to help build vocabulary and decoding skills. Learning to read can be quite a chore for 5-7 year olds. The materials requested in this project will help my students strengthen their phonics and reading skills by providing materials to enhance their learning with hands on activities. Kindergarten students are curious and like to learn with materials they can manipulate. These materials also provide opportunities to build their fine motor skills. They would be so excited to be able to have these fun and educational materials. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! These little videos from the vendor describe a couple of the learning tools being requested. x x YouTube Video x x YouTube Video

Both of our projects from last week were completed, and our readers had a lot to do with that! Project #1, Beautiful Birds: Ms. Winningham knew how fascinated her South Carolina elementary school students will be by an up-close view of the local birds. She writes: Thank you all so much for your kind words and generous donation to our project that is meant to help us learn about bird behaviors and their habitats. The students were excited as soon as they opened the boxes. They just couldn't wait to put up the clear bird feeders and put out the different varieties of bird seeds. It only took a few days before we started noticing a wonderful and bright variety of birds, and the occasional squirrel, were visiting our feeders. We were able to get an up close view of nature while safely respecting the boundaries of the animals. Project #2, Music Book Bonanza: In North Carolina, Mrs. Mitchell-Harris teaches elementary school music, and makes sure to provide her students with plenty of books about diverse musicians, to help them embrace reading. She writes: Thank you so much for supporting my students. They will greatly appreciate the new books. They love making the connections with reading and music. I am so glad to be able to teach them music and help with reading. It's donors who help make our creative ideas possible. You have made some kids very happy.

DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education.

Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project combats the anti-science, anti-education push in conservative America by funding science, math, and literacy projects in red-state public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.

Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required!

Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1034! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
