The Patch. 9 cages, 3 plants per cage, plus a few stuck here and there...

Please see This Diary for info on specific varieties. More info about The Sully Project can be found Here and Here. Most of the Sully Dwarfs are being grown in containers; I’ve still got a few to get planted out. 2 Sully Dwarfs are in-ground.

These 3 cages are all planted with the Sully Volunteers...

Y’all might notice my nice crop of nut grass. It’s terribly hard to control, much less eradicate. My neighbor, Mr. Rufus, says that the best way to get rid of nut grass is to move and leave it for the new owners… ;/ It’s technically called Nutsedge. I’ve been digging up a shovelful and sifting through to remove the “nuts”, but it’s a slow process. I reckon that if I do a shovelful a day for about 10 years, I might make a dent in it...

The target patch.

A shovelful, and sift...

More than 20 of the “nuts”. I’m sure I missed more than a few...

Over in The Pepper Patch, things are pretty well set. I’ve got a a few more to plant out; waiting on them to get a bit bigger...

Wink’s trying to decide which pot to pee on...

The wire cages are temporary, just to discourage the cats from laying in the pots until the plants get a bit more established. They apparently really like the texture and warmth of the mulch… The usual varieties this year include Prairie Spice, Jalapeño and Hinkelhatz. Not long after planting out, I noticed some leaf damage to some of the Prairie Spice and Hinkelhatz plants.

Prairie Spice leaf damage.

It turns out that the compartmented bricks that these pots sit on have become luxury condos for a sizeable population of garden slugs. They were having a quite a party in the overnight hours. Thankfully, I caught it early; a liberal application of table salt seems to have solved the problem…

On a more colorful note, I found these containers buried in the brush between us and the neighbor that we had removed last month. I needed more containers, and these came along at the right time...

That’s about all I’ve got for this Saturday Morning. What’s going on in your garden?
