I rolled to my back so he could have my chest to lie on. Some time ago, Freddie decided that when we were in bed, the best way for him to signal his desire to be petted was for him to climb on top of me. He is very good at not doing it when I’m asleep, but the moment he senses I’m awake, he climbs to the top of the mountain.

He settled his bulk on top of me, tucking his paws in under himself and blinking down at my face. I used both hands to stroke and scratch him. “You’re a good boy,” I said.

“I know.”

“And such a nice boy.”

He blinked, slow and long. “That’s true.”

“And pretty, too. Such a handsome boy.”

“I am, very much so.”

He stood and stretched, his paws a great weight on my flesh. “Ow!” I whisper-screamed.

“I’m done being petted now,” he announced, climbing off my chest by way of my stomach.

“Oof!” I said.

“You should be quiet,” Freddie admonished. “Other humans are sleeping.”

I reached under him and rubbed his belly grinning in the dark when his purr increased in volume in response. But he was done with physical affection and he dropped his body on top of my hand.

“Silly,” I whispered, retrieving my hand.

I rolled over to my preferred sleeping position on my side and closed my eyes. Freddie was still purring and the noise relaxed me better than a cup of tea or a valium ever could. I felt my limbs grow heavy as I drifted. Occasionally, I lifted my left hand to stroke the part of Freddie’s fur I could reach.

He got up and moved about a foot towards the end of the bed.

Just out of my reach.

I sighed, and focused on going back to sleep.

An undetermined amount of time later, I felt a tickle on my face and a sense of being observed. I opened my eyes and my vision was filled with a very close tan snout and whiskers. “Are you smelling my eye?” I asked.

“You’re awake,” he observed.

“Uh-huh.”

“I need you to move your arm so you can put it around me.”

I knew exactly what he wanted and I obliged, moving my left arm away from my body so he could cuddle close. Once he was settled, I’d wrap the arm around him.

He took his sweet time, but eventually we were both settled and cuddled.

This was my favorite way to sleep.

I woke up very uncomfortable, but relieved that my bedroom was still dark. The quality of the light told me it was very early morning and I guessed that I had at least two hours of sleep before the alarm went off.

My hip was sore from lying in one position for too long. I tried to shift my lower body to relieve the pressure, but it somehow made it worse.

“Freddie,” I whispered to the ball of fur next to my face. “I need to move.”

He sighed in contentment, obviously still very comfortable.

I carefully moved my arm out from under his body and rolled to my back. The relief was immediate and intense.

Freddie stood and walked to the edge of the bed. “You don’t have to go!” I said, reaching for him.

“It’s ruined,” he said, and jumped off the bed.

I was very much awake and considered opening my book and reading for a few minutes to make myself sleepy again. I didn’t do it, concerned that I would just wake up more.

Freddie leapt onto the bed in his customary energetic way, announcing himself with a graceful jump and a raised tail. He saw I was awake and waked confidently to me, climbing up on my chest.

“It’s time for pets,” I said.

He purred in response.

Sleepiness hit me hard, slowing my hand on Freddie’s fur. I closed my eyes and drifted away. I felt the gentle touch of his nose on mine as he checked for wakefulness.

“No more pets,” he said, a little sadly.

“Just a little nap,” I murmured.

“I like little naps,” he said, resting his head on my collar bone.

Happy Caturday, Peeps! I’ve thought about nothing but sleep all day, and this sleepy tale was the result.
